I have recently sold my boat, and I'm not sure how to answer the following quesitons for the gentleman who purchased it.
1. Does he register boat and trailer with the DMV here in MN or do you register the trailer with the DMV and the boat with the DNR?? I just moved here from SD so it still has SD plates ect...
2. How can I best write the receipts to help this gentleman with taxes. Is the trailer tax different than the boat tax amount???
What other things should I be aware of as the seller???
Thanks for any and all input!!!!

He has to pay salea tax on the trailer, not the boat. The trailer has to be registered and tagged with the dmv, but if I remember right, the boat stickers are also gotten at the deputy registrar, same place as the trailer.

He will get the opportunity to pay a variety of fees and fill out some forms. The only sales tax is on the trailer, you can give him a reciept but he can tell them whatever he wants as the trailer value.
He pays a license fee for the trailer, a license fee for the boat and I believe a title transfer fee for the boat (and maybe the trailer).
If he goes into any license registrar they can take care of all of that for him.

What are you guys talking about sales tax on the trailer.
I just bought a USED boat trailer for my duck boat last year from a private party. I am looking at the recipt right now. The only thing I paid for other then the price of the trailer was the license tab fee of $10 and a new plate fee of $5. The is nothing about sales tax. I also have the same receipt for the snowmobile trailer I bought 5 years ago from a private party. There was no sales tax for that either. Where are you getting the sales tax from??? Who is charging you?

Aqua, any time I've had to register any thing I bought with wheels on it, the dmv has charged me sales tax. Horse trailer, several boat trailers.

Wait till you have to buy new plates for your trailer now. (any trailer) Fifty some bucks now but it is a life time plate. As long as you own it. The way I understand it that when you trade or sell your trailer then the buyer has to buy a new plate. Any body else know anything about this, I hope I got it right. Thats in Mn. Wile E

typically when you register and vehicle, sled, trailer ect.. you have to pay a sales tax to the state. I'm new to MN so I wasn't sure what fees this guy would incur. You know MN, a fee or a tax for just about everything we do....
I bought a sled trailer from a buddy in WI. When I registered it in MN I did not pay sales tax, but they nicked me based upon the weight rating (size) of the trailer.
When I bought a boat from my uncle in WI, and registered it in MN, they only needed a bill of sale, but I don't think I paid any taxes on it. I didn't have the title with me, so that may be why they wanted bill of sale. Either way, it was releatively cheap to do it, though I did remember complaining as there were so many little fees...

Wrong!!! it is 29$ for the lifetime trailer license.
I wish some one could tell me what color there lifetime boat trailer license is because I have been using my utility trailer license for the boat.
I know shame shame on me but I have 3 utility trailers and I believe MN government should say shame shame on them because we pay sales tax every time we buy something with wheels not just the first time it is bought from a retailer when it is new. OH I SOLD MY USED PUTER TO YOU LETS SEE THAT'S 300$ plus tax :( :(

You should have been taxed on the trailer. When I bought my year old, used boat I bought from a private party, I actually had to go to NADA guides and show proof of the value of the boat trailer! It was valued at about $1,000, so I had to pay $65 is tax, change of ownership crap fees, etc...came to about $85 when it was done. Then a year later (in 2000) I had to renew the plate tab, $30 some bucks or so. No taxes on boats, ATV's (anything relating to DNR licensure, and not used on MN roadways).
I bought a cheap duck boat and trailer this fall for $325 and they wanted value of the trailer! It was homemade from 1972, so I said it's pretty rough....maybe $50. Bingo, taxed on that.
Aquaman, you got off lucky. What deputy registrar do you use? :)

After looking in the file for each trailer and finding the receipts last night, I began to think if there were other fees, so I looked at the last couple years expenses. (ain't Quicken slick!) Bottome line, I did NOT pay ANY tax on either trailer when first registered. Name transfer, tabs/plates on each. Neither fee exceeded $15. These were purchased from private parties and registered at the Eagan License buereu on Beau D Rue and Rahn.
In fact, when I transfered ownership on the utility trailer from my fathers name to mine, it was $5 total. No taxes, no tabs or plates. Just the name transfer.
So I called them. Since all 3 were 10 years old, there is no tax anymore. There ya have it. Tax on newer trailers IS 6.5% of retail or fair market, which ever is higher.
So, sorry for misinfo..kinda. I just never paid it and thought you guys were nuts! <grin>

also, as an after thought, there is no tax if sold to a family member.
