Steve,
I had a couple questions for you. First off, what kind of Lund do you run? and do you have it rigged for handlining? After talking to Juls I am ready to purchase the reels but I don't know if I want to go rails or use my rod holder mounts that I have now. I don't think I have them in the best spot to handline.
I was just wondering if you could offer me some tips.

Oh by the way, I talked to my wifes sisters and they said no way to learning the fishing game, no matter how much money anyone had. So I guess there are some out there that just can't be trained. lol

Thanks,

Craig A

First, to the important stuff. Tell those sisters of wifey pooh, they don't know what they're missing!
I proudly run an 1800 pro v tiller with a 90 4-stroke Mercury.
Hand-lining?? Queen Julia hasn't taught me yet...so I know NOTHING. But she promised she would. Guess I had better ask the same questions you ask. lol Geez...the day I gotta hand-line...lol

before you decide to go handlining i'd ask julia d how many tournaments are won by handlining?

Hey, I might look dumb, but I ain't gonna argue with the queen about hand-ling. lol I know NOTHING!lol
Who knows, I might be an old dog that learns a new trick. I will have an open mind, for sure. If my hands are shot afterwards, I'll just have somebody else carry the big check for me.lol So JULS...get me outta this one!

What does that have to do with someone wanting to learn it. It CAN be used outside of tournaments, and it IS fun and an effective way to catch fish.

And, no...we won't be using the handlines on Mille Lacs. I DO know how to fish other presentations. Handlining is just one of my favorites.

grrrrr.

p.s. To answer your question jigger. The MWC Champs (Eric and Jason) two years ago won it using handlines on the Mississippi river I believe.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I read juls article on handlining . in it she was told she was only allowed to learn with one lead. I'm missing something here but how do you do two or more leads???

Didn't they also make it illegal for the guys in the PWT to use because it was a real effective way to catch fish. I could be mistaken. I think they also found away around it by using a heavy pole instead of the reel.

Legend,
Your leads are attached to a shank that is, generally speaking, 5 foot in length. There are clevises on the shank 6 inches apart from the top of the shank to the bottom....

the leads are attached to the clevises, which enables you to run more than one lead. I run two, and don't plan on using more than that. It could get messy if more than two are used. I have heard of the fellas over on the Detroit River using up to four, but they are veterans, and have a system well in place for doing that.

For me, when I hold the shank verticle with the weight attached on the bottom...my bottom lead hits my knee and the top lead hits my....ummm how can I put this without getting stupid remarks...mid breast.

Why the extra clevises then? Well, when you are fishing and need to make adjustments, you can move the leads up or down the shank. When you move the lead on the shank 6 inches, your adjusting your bait 2 inches. So, for example, if your bait is hitting bottom and getting junked up, move it up to the next clevis and move your bait off the bottom by 2 inches.

hope this helps...

Heheh...sorry..he ruffled my feathers..;-) Forgot about that Steve...just remembered telling you I would teach you when I got up to MN in MAY. Guess I'll have to set aside some prefishing time to teach you over on the Detroit.

Stinger...where in Wisco do you reside? I don't remember...if your up near Fond du Lac, get in touch with Marge and Gary Pelkey. They will help you set up your boat for handlining. Email me and I will give you their email or phone number if you don't have it. They are always more than willing to help out a fellow angler. They know as much about handlining as I do, so you will be in good hands.

Hey Juls, I REALLY like post # 4, you tell em!!! There is also a third option for mounting your reels now. Larry told me just the other day that he now has a c-clamp mount option too. It's not no nickel and dime rig either. So that may be an option for you Stinger. As far as the 3 leads, it really isn't all that bad. Sure the first time or two you do it the chances are good you might end up with a mess. But with just a little patience and with the heavy line you use you can usually get the mess out pretty easy. For me anyway the biggest problem comes when you hook 2 at a time. That can be ugly to be honest. If it looks nasty I just cut the lines and put new leads on . Just wanna make sure you got a few extra laying around. I've had clients in the boat doing this for the first time. On their next trip a few of them are running 3 lines. It's just a learning curve like anything else. Learn from your mistakes and be willing to sacrifice a little extra line. Just my 2 cents worth. A DIE HARD HANDLINER. Hutch

Berts Custom Tackle makes a mount that slides into a track that makes a nice clean mount for your handlines. Drop me an e-mail and I can tell you about them. Bo #582

Are these the same mounts used for Downrigger mounts? If they are the same, these are great! You could use for both options then.
