View Full Version : Pulling crankbaits with tuffline?

Has anyone used tuffline to pull crankbaits and had success reaching their desired depths?
I have tried a couple times this summer using 35 lb tuff line (10 lb diameter) and cannot get my lures anywhere near the depth that precision trolling guide 8 lists that they should be.
One time this summer I was fishing 6-10' of water. PTG listed that with 10lb test I would need to let out 75' of line. to reach 6'. I would let out 125+ and still would not touch bottom.
I had similar experiences with deep divers. I would have to let out 50-75 ' more than what PTG recommended. I am thinking it is time to switch to power pro. Is this stuff coated with something that makes it harder to run deep?

No offense but don't you think 35# is a bit over doing it for walleye? What do you do if you get snagged up and the snag doesn't come loose?. Most guys I fish with troll for walleye using 10# and maybe 14# unless there is a specific reason like wanting to be able to pull up trees.

Anyway I am guessing that the problems is that the 10# diameter of tuff line is not the same as 10# XT. Try running 10# xt or 12# sensation. Look at the actual line diameter and see if they match 10#XT. Only other guess is that your lure is messed up.

I think that the problem with the 35lb tuff line, is not the diameter as much as the flotation properties of the line.
Most braided lines tend to float quite a bit more than the same size mono line.

Therefore, if you were to downsize to 10 or 15 lb tuff line, I expect that you would be just fine.

Take care

The guy may be interested not so much in the 35# test but rather the 10 diameter so that he can follow the Precision Trolling guide without making adjustments. Except in this case it isn't working.

I myself did much the same with power pro. I wasn't so much interested in the 30# test, rather the 8# diameter to closely follow the PTG.

This is exactly the reason I went with the 35lb tuff line. I thought I could use the precision trolling guide and look at the 10lb mono and the 10 lb. fireline and get an idea on what amount of line to let out. I believe the fireline is a flat line and the tuff line appears to be more of a round braid. I didn't think it would make that big of a difference.

I think Fireline is actually a fused line (round) and that Tuff Line is a braid which wil flatten out. Besides what REW mentioned a 10lb diameter of one oline may be different than 10#XT by a little.

I've used 30 lb braid quite a bit pulling plugs for walleye as well as salmon and steelhead on the Columbia River and my experience has been that it dives deeper than 10 lb mono. I haven't noticed any difference between Tuff XP, Stren Super Braid, or Powerpro in this regard-- they all let the lures dive great. Are your lures properly tuned? Usually if I'm not banging bottom when expected I'll check and find an out-of-tune plug.

I would have to agree with the above statement....

Something is out of tune..

I seemed to have the same problem with multiple lures. Maybe the 35 lb test is to thick of a diameter?

So how do you guys tune these big crankbaits like the Rapala Taildancer?

Just like the small ones. Drop it next to the boat, watch it for a second, give it a rip forward to see which way it's diving, and bend the eyelet the way you want the lure to go. Tiny adjustments only!
