I remember hearing Mr Harsh talking one time, when he fishes with crawlers, he will take and put them in a bucket for the day so they stretch and soak up water, anyone else do this?

more than anything it makes them a LOT cleaner to deal with... and the black flies don't seem to be as attracted since the stinky dirt isn't there.

Only way I take them on the boat. I take what I need out of the container in the fridge w/bedding, wash them off and put them in H2O with some ice and they stay fresh all day. They will actually live for many days this way but they get kind of anemic looking after a while. The ones that are left get put back in the bedding when home - most seem to recover OK. Keeps the boat much cleaner and you can leave them right out where you need them without having to constantly get them from cooler.

I use a 1 gallon zip lock bag with ice water, i'll put 1 or 2 dozen in there so they are ready to roll and so I can keep them in arms reach when in the back of the boat, they do stretch out and much cleaner and easier to deal with, expecially when your on a good bite.

No sweat Moreyes, what corn falls off the hook I usually throw on a piece of rye bread and make sandwiches out of, I did tell you I was furnishing grub for the 20th right???
Personally I don't use crawlers much, so I usually store them in a compartment in the original styrofoam container, least till the smell gets bad enough to remember them....
Or on them rare occasions I do remember early, I'll keep them in a mixture of dirt and styrofoam balls, the little ones like in bean bag chairs and keep that in a cooler, if nothing else, they taste good with the corn....

This is the ultimate clean crawler technique. Read it here, I think. If I have time to do it, the day before I take the crawlers out of the tubs I buy them in and rinse them all off with the hose. Then put them in a big zip lock bag about 1/8 filled with water and a few whole sheets of paper towel. Store them in the frig overnight and they're PLUMP!!! Clean as can be for the boat too. :)

I clean the crawlers and put them in a Leech Tamer. I keep them in my small baitwell filled with ice instead of water.

I always keep a foam cooler in the boat.Once I get to where I am fishing I throw a few ice cubes in the container and then some worms on top.Keeps the boat clean and the worms big and fat.Nothing beats spinners and big crawlers

Keep them cool either in bedding or in water. Warm crawlers die quickly and quit being lively long before that.
Overnight in very cold water will plump them up and make them very lively. Let the water warm up though and they drown and then you have a stinky mess that is worthless for bait which should tell that the cooler the water you are fishing in the more active the crawlers will stay, too.

OK let me get this strait... ? a crawler wont drownd if its in icecold water? it will get bigger and fatter? ok if i soak em over night will they loose there flavor? does anyone add anything to the water to make them tast better to a walleye? again i wont kill them unless the water gets warm? are you sure?

At very cold temperatures just above freezing they become virtually impossible to drown, but the warmer you get, they quicker they expire under any adverse conditions. You can probably not keep nitecrawlers indefinitely at room temperature no matter what the moisture. That is simply too warm. Warm temperature is the real killer.
After you plump them up, put them back in bedding when you go out fishing. The slime they produce to move through soil is a very important instinct smell to a walleye(we did some research into the amino acids in the slime).
Remember to change the nightcrawler your fishing with often, when the bite is slow.

Back when I fished tournaments I would shred some newspaper, add a little water & crawlers in a sixpack cooler. Then keep that cooler in an 18 qt cooler with drinks, food, ice. While fishing every now & then put the small cooler back in the big one to cool it back down. The worms are clean & cool. The 18 qt cooler is big enough to hold every thing you need for the day but small enough to get out of the way easily when needed.

Replace limp or shredded crawlers quickly. Fresh, lively crawlers definitely catch more fish than limp, beat up ones. It really helps their presentation in the water, if you keep them properly in the boat, and that means as cool as possible.
If little sunfish and/or perch are tearing up your crawlers, you are fishing on the wrong part of the structure. Even if there are walleye's there, you will not be able to get your bait to them. If that will satisfy you, save your crawlers and use angle or leaf worms on small enough aberdeen hooks to get into the little mouths or all you will do is feed them. Sunfish will actually eat around a hook if either it or the bait on it is too large.
However, if you are taking really big bluegills or jumbo perch that is more in the area you want, and you can mark those areas with a way point and come back to them, if the walleyes don't cooperate. That can save the day when the walleyes refuse to bite, and both are worth it as bonus fish for both catching and eating.
