I am just woundering how many handliners use spoons and what types of spoons do you use. I am looking to try some this year but do not know which ones to start with.
Are there any conditions when you prefer spoons over flies or cranks?

I like to use small flutter spoons when the water is clean on the Detroit and St Clair rivers in May thru Sept. They imitate the small bait fish that are in the system then very well.

The best spoons are locally made and are available in most of the local tackle shops in the Detroit area. The go for about $.69 cents each and come in a variety of colors and styles. Our best color this year has been the “Belgium flag”, black & yellow & red. Call Lakeside tackle in St. Clair Shores, they have a great selection, 586-777-7003.

When using spoons I drop the leader test from 20# to 14#. The lighter line give a better action to the spoons. I also reverse the leader and use the snap swivel at the spoon end of the leader for better action.
