I want to fish grren bay for walleyes this fall. Should I be pulling harnesses or cranks. Day or Night? Any info appreciated. The people at the bait shop were not very helpful...not looking for any spots just some direction, or should I put the boat away and bowhunt?

Typically, fall fishing in big water is quite productive with crank baits.

Depending on water clarity, it is a day or night bite. i.e. dark water tends to be a day bite, and clear water tends to be a night bite.

Take care

Remember, big baits equal big fish.

Not sure of where in Green Bay you are talking about, but here in the north end, Cedar River to LBDN, cranks will usually get better and better as the water cools and evening/night fishing will normally produce best. That said, I like to fish harnesses during the day/afternoon in basin areas until the water gets in the mid to high 40's at speeds anywhere from 1-1.4. Evenings into night, cranks are easier for me to work. Fish can be on bottom or suspended, (usually both)so I try to cover more than one depth until something starts working. Basin areas up to 45' or more can hold walleyes during the day, best are adjacent to reefs or bars. Many fish move shallow at night, but not all. If the reefs are crowded, try suspended fish over deeper water. Good Luck

Rookie,
In the fall it's all about the night bite for me.( late night)
In the spring they seem to show up much earlyer. (early evening)
Don't ask me why? Just the way it has been for me.
This is Big Big water, think safe.pfd, kill switch,VHF!
Fish Creek and Judd, make sure you hit pen state park shore.
If you can Sister Bay.This is not a numbers game, but the one's you get you'll take to the grave.Pay your due's and you will be rewarded!!!
The fish seem to get much bigger the closer you are to ice up,but the weather.(wow now thats cold)Last year my best was just over 11 pounds. That night it was 17 degrees(ouch). Again please think safe,
get wind and weather from coast guard, allmost every year someone get killed up there fishing. hee warning!
Good luck!!!

Wow, thanks for the info and the warning. My friend and I iced some really nice eyes out there the last two winters...talk about scary ice. I've never witnessed ice like that before. I have a week of vacation to use before the new year...maybe I will see you out there...if we don't have ice??? As the water cools do you slow down?
I really appreciate the info. If you ever need ice fishing info just ask. Do you think you average a fish a night?

Start just before dark to get your bearings, then troll crank baits, rod in hand, along the first break to deep water. Say 7 - 12 feet of water It's all boulders, and you will be very close to shore at times. GO slow, 1 mph or even slower. We troll rod in hand to keep the baits as close to the break as possible. Again, be very careful if there are on shore waves. Most any shoreline can be good the entire west shore of Door County. Other areas include the shoals and off shore reefs at night. Trolling with boards can add lines in that situation, but I prefer to work specific drops rod in hand.
Good Luck. Stop in at the Bayside and have one for me.

Doc has some good advice.

If you have a gps that will leave a nice track - go out before it gets dark in the mid afternoon, and run some tracks where you would like to troll.

Then, when it gets dark, you will have a gps electronic cookie crumb trail to follow and keep you off shore and out of trouble.

Take care
