hi I think I will try some trolling on erie next year.I was wondering what would be a good trolling setup. Which would be a better setup in line planers or mast planers.I have a 21' boat. Also how long of rods do you use for planers? thanks

We fish the "big" boards and run 7' ugly sticks 7 have been working this system for many years.

Trolling can be costly. To spread this out a little, most start with 4 to 6 rods (all alike) and in-line boards. Line counter reels will simplify the situation. Next add the Dipsy set ups (if you're in the central basin), and a mast and big boards (if you fish only the west end). The in-line board rods will be fine for big boards, but most use special Dipsy rods for Dipsys, again (all alike).

Some of this depends on how many fisherman you typically fish with.
Go to a good trolling shop (Like Den's or Dave's or the Rod Maker Shoppe) and get their help. Think about what kind of line you want to run because that needs to be in the discussion.

Good luck.
