Okay fishing peoples of elusive walleye, now that I have a missing thumnail, what's the best way to attach split rings on cranks and new hooks on the rings? Is there a tool for this?

I use my Rapala pliers. They have a "tit" on one of the jaws to open up the split ring.

Yup.
They are called "split ring pliers".
Example =
www.barlowstackle.com
Then click -"Tools for making Fishing Lures and Fishing tools"
Then click "split ring pliers".

I would not get the economy split ring pliers. They are more trouble than using needle nose pliers.

The ones that I was trying to show were about $20. (I can't get 'em to show now).
I agree!
I wouldn't mess with those cheapo stamped ones , either. ;)
Try these...

The other ones looked good. Having attempted to change the trebles on 10+ lures one night using the economy pair, I would highly recommend against it. Spend the bucks and get a decent pair :) I can still feel those blisters a couple of years later :)

Yep... some of the ones shown in the link I posted were Texas brand. ;)
