In a lake like you're describing, where there's too much of a good thing (bait), I've never had much luck using "finesse" or "match the hatch" fishing. Just the opposite. Big lures, lots of flash, more sound, more speed.... It just doesn't make sense (sometimes) to try to make your lure look like all the rest of the bait in the lake. I try to get a reaction out of them. (edit) Even better than the real thing might apply.
As for weeds, sometimes ripping your lures out of them can be a good thing, too.
:-) Good luck

-by late June/1st of July my lake has more shad & mayflies than you can shake a stick at in the daytime, along w/the eyes are mostly turned off by boat traffic.

I like to feed their sweet-tooth after dark on weekdayz with C'Dad's, fake ones that is. And yes they will move for there 'candy even with full belly's of other food ~ taint sayin' much more other than midnite to dawn is a good time to hang a sUMo...

THerein lies the secret. Definition.

Easier said than done - but - define the school(s) of bait and fish where the density is not. Fish the edges and pockets just as you would a weed bed.
