I am fairly new to the "walleye world", and want to learn more and become a better walleye fisherman. I live in Omaha, Nebraska and have access to a private lake with a goog population of eyes. The lake itself is about 80-90 feet deep along the rock dam, and then can get as shallow as 4-5 in coves etc. To get me started, can you guys help me in getting started with some basics.

1) What is a good starting water temp, or a good time to start fishing?

2) Where would I most likely find them?

3) Would I troll, jig?

You'll have to bare with me, I just want to learn the basics so I can catch some more and better eyes.

Thanks,
Trev

A private lake filled with eyes; Awsome! First check the regs to see if there is a closed season. There may be one even in a private lake. Next go fishing. Depending on the time of year, time of day etc. the eyes will change locations, turn on and off etc. Check out the articles here and experiment until you find the pattern that works. The pattern will change during the year. Makes things interesting and sometimes just plain weird. Drifting using jigs and achored using slip bobbers are good ways to find where the eyes are or to fish a piece of structure. Trolling is good for locating the fish and is sometimes the only way to get them to the net, but I would stick with longlining at first. Boards can be a hassel if you are not practiced in their use. Have fun.
