View Full Version : Travel Rod?
Just need a little advice. I´m looking for a nice spinning rod that I can travel with. I´m looking for something that will fit as easily in a backpack as it will in my suitcase. I want something that will be useful for walleye and that size fish. If need be I can throw a smaller jig with a larger rod rather than the other way around.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Any of the 4 piece 6-7 foot rods in a medium light action should fill the bill with a 2000 sized reel - filled with 6 lb line.
Take care

I picked up this one for my dad a few years back...

I got him the 4 piece 6 foot version. It's been all over: Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, etc. He's had no problems with it. He carries a 2000 size spinning reel like REW suggests with a spare spool. One is spooled with light pound mono, one with heavier braid. He keeps a small plano box with multi-purpose terminal tackle that he takes along too.

Good post, I really like ugly sticks for spinning rods, so I am going to get one of these.
I would add the Abu Garcia 300ul reel, like I do for the UL Ugly sticks I have. Fishing in Canada for eyes up to 8# no problem (one 4# and one 6# spool or 6# and 8#) depends on you.

This one looks pretty good and maybe a better deal for $42.

I picked up 4 rods for backpacking. 2 from Cabelas and 2 from Gander Mountain. I prefer the 2 from Gander Mountain. They also had different styles and lengths to choose from. The Gander rods are graphite and more sensitive. Both rods were used in Isle Royale and multi-tasked trolling ,jigging and casting.

Gander Mountain has different stlye rods and different lengths I picked up 2 spinning rods that are telescopic graphite rods. They are more sensitive for jigging than the glass rods I picked up from Cabelas. One is 6' and the other is 6 1/2 ' they came with a eye protector and a small tube to protect it.They are called guide series Model GS-606MS-T. We used them for casting, jigging and trolling for Walleye and Pike. Trolled with a bottom Bouncer and spoon in Lake Sisquit and caught a nice laker. Everything had to be packed in and we fished out of a canoe that we portaged. Either way you go take spare rods and reels if you have equipment failures there are no stores to get more.
