I tied a slow death rig hook on a 3' leader(8# Berkeley Vanish transition) could not get the 1/2 crawler to spin at less than 1.5 mph. Is the Vanish Transition the wrong leader material? Does the leader need to be longer? I hear that the slow death rig should spin at very slow speeds like .3 mph.

Here's a good explanation of the rig...

The spinning has everything to do with the hook. You need to use a Tru-turn or the new Mustad hooks. The reason there is a slow death hook is because Tru-turns aren't always the most consistent spinners. I have had hooks from the same package, one spins like a top the other won't turn over at all. Your leader length and material are fine. You may also want to tie the rig with a ball bearing swivle on the other end. You should be able to pull the rig from .3 to 1 mph.
