Can anyone out there fill me in on this lake in New York state? I've moved north to this area and hear the walleye fishin' is good there. Got my map and I'm gettin' some winter ideas. Also can anyone clue me in on launch info too? The one on the western end at the county park looks like a good starting point. And I hear the storms bring it to a boil. And sink boats. Thanks to all in advance.

Welcome to New York.

Oneida Lake is a great lake to fish, lots of walleyes.

The county park has a good launch on the West end but there are a few launches that are free on the south side, tend to fill up on busy weekends.

Lots of weed beds and rocky shoals, go easy until you learn the lake.

I have a very good map of Oneida that shows ramps, sholes, and depths all over the lake. Trouble is, to get the clairity and detail of the map, (If you want it) it would have to be sent through regular e-mail (need your e-mail addy) as an atachment because the file is so large (310kb)

The walleye fishing there has been VERY good this year. Oneida fishing (summer and winter) is discussed allot here:

Welcome to the area. Oneida is a great place if you like to fish walleyes. Not the 10# + monsters that we get on lake ontario, but there are plenty of great eating size fish. Any style of fishing can be used, from live bait to jigging, trolling or casting from shore. I fish the lake frequently during the open water season and have a good sized group of friends who do too. We always have a good time on Oneida. If you need any specific info don't be afraid to ask this place is a great resource. The launch on the west end is Oneida Shores and is run by Onondaga County, There are also NYS launches, one shallow launch in Bridgeport on the south shore, and one near Cleveland called Godfrey Pt on the north shore. This launch may take you a little longer to reach, but will accomodate larger boats and has a great paved parking lot, with a nice ramp and floating docks. Just a few things the launch is fairly steep, so keep it strapped until you are ready to go, and as you head out stay between the buoys. They are very close together and if you stray to one side or the other your prop and lower unit will hate you. The south shore launch should only be used when the water is fairly high or there can be problems. Good luck, see you out there some time in May.

Around the islands toward the West end can be very treacherous. If you are skirting Long Island or Wantry Island stay much farther away from them than you would think you should, and then double that distance. You MAY be safe then. There is a spot on Dakin Shoals that will ruin your day and a bigger area on Pancake Shoals that is just as bad. Watch closely for those pin buoys, they are there for a reason and sometimes hard to spot. Never try to go between the two bigger islands - Frenchmens and Dunhams. I have seen many people try and only one ever mabe it. Oneida can also blow up in a hurry and the waves have a short period, so it feels even worse. I have fished it for 40 years and I still have to have my prop rebuilt at least every fall. I do fish for bass also, so that doesn't help anything. The most important thing is to study a map, and proceed at an idle where the depth is questionable. The fishing can be amazing once you learn the lake a little.

You know the areas around maple and Fisher bays looks like some good areas. Also the spot to the west from there look nice for spring. I'm looking for a few spring spots because the summer warm water spots are evident. Is there much natural spawning here? I'd like to get there and do some early season Rapala fishin'. Night-time. And how is the area near the islands? Frenchman and Dunham? The shoals near Pindle Stone and Shackton look awesome. Can't wait to launch the Lund. That wind and snow we just got, just make the first maiden voyage for 2008 even sweeter....Thanks so much for the reply's gent's. I will be in the grey 50th Anv. Model Lund Angler. Stay in touch.
