View Full Version : 3 way swivel or bottom bouncer?
Looking for pro's and con's for both. When trolling a shallow/stick crank near the bottom, what seems to be the most effective to use: a three way rig or a bottom bouncer? I have done neither but plan on using this type of presentation this fishing season. Also what snell lengths for the bottom bouncer. I fish mainly clear lakes.
It seem like tangles would be a problem with the three-way but, it also seems a little more steathly than a BB.

I use both presentations and prefer the BB for higher or consistent speeds and the 3 way for eratic action, let the weight sit on bottom for a few seconds, jerk...giving the bait eratic action. I get less tangles with the 3 way when doing this, shouldn't let a BB sit on bottom, they will tangle when running a this type of presentation. For consistent speed I'll take the BB. I like a 8-10' snell.

I use the three way system in rivers. I use no more then a 18" dropper with a 48" leader to the crank.
Good info, thanks. It sounds like a BB and maybe a x-rap or is a good choice for searching for active walleyes on an irregular break in a lake where speed is going to be somewhat consistent (1.5 to 2.5). It seems on a outside weedline edge this could work also.
One more question: How much line to let out and still control the BB?

your speed dictates the amount of weight
you want your line entering the water at 45 degrees or less
the speed you state would put you at 3oz possibly 4oz's at the top end i think
sounds like you have forward trolling in mind....
both of these setups are more user friendly in reverse
and as close to the boat as possible

Bouncer is a better choice when snaggy. Bouncer may be too close to bottom for a crank. I run spinners, floaters, plain hookr, spin n glows on bouncers. Snell is usually 3' +/-. as short as 18" when really snaggy. Plain hooks can be very long.
3-Way offers you more versatility. You can adjust your dropper line. Better suited for cranks thatn a bouncer.
