Looking for a good line for casting crankbaits, my set up is a 7ft medium lite rod with a shimano symetre 2500 reel. I would like to be able to get some distance out of a #7 shad rap. Any sugestions?

P-line is good. Stren Magnathin is good. Those are my two favorites. Less coiling/twisting. For distance, you can't beat a good mono. Others may disagree.

I cast cranks on Devils Lake ALOT.
The setup I like is a 7ft or 7.5 ft Series One, Shimano Stradic 2500, and 10/2 Power Pro. The Power Pros small diameter is great for casting. I cast #5 and #7 Shad Raps, Countdowns, Eskos, #4 and #5 Salmo Hornets (which are small and lite), Ripshads, Flicker Shads and a few others. If casting into junk the Power Pro (or other braided lines) help to save a few hundred $ in cranks throughout the year.
I really dont know if the line has as much do do with distance as the the rod length/action does.
10/4 fireline has been my go to line casting small cranks.

I like the 15/4 SpiderWire Ultra Cast. Same 4 pound diameter as the Fireline, but a few more pounds of break strength. I too fish Devils Lake a ton and that extra 5 lbs saves even more money. You won't notice much of a diving difference between the line diameters so you may as well up the strength.

Thanks

Storgeon,
My personal favorite (read personal as there are alot of preferences) is my 7.5 ft med/ligh Berkley Series One. I also have a 7 ft Fenwick Eagle GT med/light that I use, however it is a bit too limber for me after getting used to the same action in the Series One. I prefer med/light because when pitcing cranks I am less likely to pull the crank out of the fishes mouth... the rod is able to load up and pretty much set the hook for me.
Jason Mitchel makes a beautiful rod or this aplication, ultralite and well built. I have used one quite a bit, dont own one yet. It, to me, is 1/2 way between the two rods I currently use for casting cranks in terms of tip action and handle length.
I do like the longer rod reel/butt end of the Fenwick vs the Berkley. The butt end of the rod is very long (almost like a Musky rod), allowing me to hold the rod but between the inside of my arm and my ribs while reeling. Puts less pressure on my casting/holding arm on a long day of casting. The tradeoff is a longer rod in the Series One (longer casts) and the tip end of the rod has more backbone.
Hope this helps.
PS: Listen to Jonnie Candle. He is n DL 10/1 vs most anglers and has probably tested and retested what works best on most techniques used on DL (one of those most popular is castng cranks/jigs).

I use a 7' Medium Moderate Techna AV Spinning rod for most of my crank pitching. It has the perfect moderate action for crankin. Like metioned before, the rod needs to have some give so it can load up on the fish without pulling the crank out of the fish's mouth.
I too like the longer handle for leverage. It is amazing how tired you can get from throwing a 1/2 oz lure all day. The lighter the rod the less fatigue will set in. The Series One rods are great choices as well, but the Techna is a touch lighter. I didn't think it would make much difference until I switched.
The other thing that will help is to use a larger reel. Get up to a size 2, not the size 1 you would verticle jig with. The larger spool will let you lures fly farther.

7' cabelas xml rod med action with fast tip has worked great for me with a 2500 symetre reel and 10/2 power pro. rod has good backbone for when you hook into some big pike. have also used the rod to troll some to.

Thank alot for the information.
I am also looking for a rigging rod and would a 7ft medium moderate action be to heavy for rigging? I sure would like to only buy 1 rod.
My biggest problem is finding a decent 2 piece rod, the storage on my 16.5 footer doesn't take 1 piece rods.
Thanks

sturgeon,
buy one of those Cabelas vertical rod rack things that fit into your pedastal bases. I know that doesn't cut it for trailering, but those things are really nice. They don't come out of the boat. Two piece rods aren't the way to go.
