Has anyone ever tried to liven up leeches by putting a small amount of salt on them just before using them as bait? It might be a way to really make them move.

You'll catch a lot more eyes with leeches laced with honey. . . 0ne teaspoon per gallon of water.

Whether you are just slip bobber fishing, jig -n-leach or rigging a leach, I put a drop of berkley power bait attractant on them and they will go ballistic, I'm sure other gel type liquid attractants would work as well. It sure speeds things up when it slows down. besides increasing the bait action you get a little added sent as well.
good luck

Not a joke... a tiny dab of Preperation H. The lady at the drug store may try to correct you when you tell her it's for your leeches!!

Apparently someone has tried the Prep H, but what made you even try it? Just curious.

Prep H has been talked up for fishing for as long as I can remember. Never tried it myself.
I think it may have some shark oil or something in the formula. There's enough guys on this board that someone will have a wise a** answer, be it right or wrong!

Preperation H Cream (white) not Ointment (clear) does work. It does have some shark oil in it, but it makes the leech swim much harder. I guess the stuff that "shrinks" swelling really irritates the skin of the leech and they swim very hard for a long time.
As for where the idea to use it came from, I've heard credit given to Leo and Leon Houle on Mille Lacs. 2 of the best live bait riggers there are.

olive oil is another good juice to get the leeches moving

WD 40 seems to get brought up from time to time, anybody try that stuff on their leeches, or minnows maybe??
Al...who just knows there's a WD40/PrepH joke out there somewhere...:)

If 50,000 folks a day put a small amount of chemicles in the water of a lake, what would happen to that lake?

I can't remember the last time I seen 50,000 people on a lake here in Minn, much less dumping any significant amount of WD-40 in the water, while your point is valid, your numbers lean to wards exaggeration and do the credibility of the statement little good.
imho

The image is bigger than both of us.
When we metaphhorically tell people that it's OK to - collectively - dump even a small amount of un-natural stuff into any body of water we are as guilty of destroying the environment as an out and out Chevron tanker oil spill. . . the only diff is time and frequency of events.:banghead:

Anyone use the Gulp type baits (I haven't yet, I use live baits). What is the solution that they come in? I assume it's natural and doesn't impact the lakes.

I think here in Chicago on a hot summer day we get at least 50,000 butts dabbed with Prep-H bobbing in Lake Michigan. I guess that is why the salmon taste alittle city.:rotflmao:

It happens all the time. Where do you think all the salt and chemicals from the roads goes? All the chemicals that run off the farm fields? Right into the lake.
On the topic of salt on the leeches...I would think that would kill them. If you put minnows into a bag of sat they are toasted. I know leeches do not have gills but cant be good. Liveley leeches come from clean, cold water.
