Just bought a new Skeeter wx1880 last year and now I want to try trolling. This will determine whether or not to buy a kicker next year. My problem is that I am starting from scratch and know nothing.

What rod, reel, line combination is best? How about planer boards? Any help would be great.

Lake Wissota often, Lake Pepin occasionally. Are there any setups that work in most applications?

The universal set up would be 10# mono on a line counter reel, mounted on a 7 - 8-1/2' rod rated for up to 15 -18# line, with a soft tip. You would be well advised to get a copy of Mark Romanack's Precision Trolling, and read the 1st 25 pages, which gives a good basic background.

Or search this site for trolling with planer boards.

Thanks for the info. I am off to stimulate the economy with some purchases.

Try to get to fish with different anglers in the area you want to fish. If you see different equipment in action it will help decided what equipment you like. Make sure every reel you buy is a line counter, except spinning reels of course.

Fish For Fun

K2,

I fish Wissota a lot in the summer trolling with off shore boards. If you see a Blue Princecraft 176 super pro pulling yellow boards it's most likely me, although there is an identical boat on there a lot. I have a 115 Yamaha and a Merc 9.9 kicker. Send me an email to cmherrmann@charter.net and we can get together on my boat for a day or two and you can get a feel for it. Always looking for someone new to fish with.

The rod is an Okuma GL Convector series. The one I use is an 8 foot medium model number
CGL-C-802M. The other good choice in trolling rods is the Okuma Blue Diamond series. These are a little less money than the GL series. The BD-C-862M-1 is a good multi-purpose trolling rod for walleye and other species.

I use Catalina CT-20 line counter reels. The Convector CV-20 is another good option for a little less money.
