My future bride wants me to take her up fishing for our honeymoon. I'm looking for a really nice place to take her. Very nice cabins with good fishing in early July. It would also be nice if there were others activities within driving distance. We were thinking Northern Wisconsin or Minnesota. We live outside of Chicago. Thanks

Hah, I was there sixteen years ago, and when we got there, she started crying and said, "I didnt know you meant a real cabin with logs!!"

Well, the rest is history, we've been outdooring it ever since.

We went to the boundery waters in MN/Canada.

Good luck and congrats!

Dude...you got lucky man. Did you have to train her or did she come that way? Congratulations...either way you got a keeper!

One of the more enjoyable places where my Wife and I stayed was at the Voyagers National Park. We stayed at the Kettle Falls Hotel.
Very nice foks, have nice breakfasts and dinners.
They will pack a bag lunch for you, if you don't hire a guide and have him cook a shore lunch for you.

The scenery is spectacular, and the fishing can be great to ok - depending on how you hit it, and how the weather has been.

If you do go there, hire a guide for a day or so, to learn the area.

Even if you don't catch fish, it is such a beautiful area - lots of wild life and other wonderful things to see.

Take care

Absolutely, check out Sportsman's Lodge at Lake of the Woods on the Minnesota/Ontario border. The kids/bride will love it. The fishing is great. Very NICE lodging, food, entertainment, and service. Ask for Al Holte at 800-862-8602.
There are many great, fun, comfortable places, but when you add in the fishing/family part, the charter set-up there is second to none.

Let me give you a bit of advice coming out of my own experience and the experiences of my friends. But first, I will have to also say that this advice applies to MOST women, not one SPECIFIC woman so you have to judge this generalized advice against the ONE woman you are with.

First, the posts about "nice facilities" are absolutely correct. Include bathrooms and showers in that. You will be surprised at how much those mean to a woman. And "central showers" where they have to walk to in the middle of the camp may or may NOT cut it. And "CLEAN" is important ... what you and I will overlook, a woman will NOT. Their mom's drilled it into them ... it is part of their "nesting" that you and I benefit from at home but which can lead to interesting situations during travel.

Second, "nice facilities" means no crawling or flying bugs inside the cabin. No exceptions here.

Third, if you are an expert fisherman and can get her on lots of action, good. If you are an "ok" fisherman and will take a couple of days to figure out the water to get onto "some" fish ... HIRE A GUIDE the first two or three days. If you want a fishing partner and she does not currently fish, you need to make this week a fulfilling one on the water or she may never want to go again ... not even to give it a second chance. Plus, if you hire a guide, take lake maps and a hand-held GPS along to record the spots the guide will show you. It is important to get him to cover lots of water those 2 or 3 days you hire him ... enough spots to last you the rest of the week as you revisit them with her and without the guide.

Last, read again the post above talking about the wife crying and saying "I did not know you meant REAL LOGS". Show her pix of the cabins if you can. Good for that man's wife for hanging in there and making the best of her surprise, but I bet it would have been a lot easier for him if she had NOT been surprised in the first place!

Good luck to you. My wife is my fishing partner and I am the better off for it. You will be too.

Another lucky one! My wife and I spent our honeymoon at my uncle's new lodge just north of Grand Marais on Devil Track Lake. We were there in the fall and the fishing was tough with the cold and the fronts that moved in. My wife outfished me 2 to 1 (you have to let that happen....you'll be glad you did at the end of the day!). We also did a little grouse hunting, but it stunk because I had to leave my dog at home. He wasn't allowed on the honeymoon :(

One morning while we ate breakfast I saw a bull moose swimming across the lake, towards the lodge. We ran to the shoreline and hid behind a massive rock, and the moose swam to shore right where we were hiding. Man, what a sight! We were 10 yards from it when it realized we were there and it then returned to the water and swam back to where it came from.

The north shore of Lake Superior is great, and real close to day canoe trips into the BWCA. Lots of land to be alone and enjoy some excellent fishing.

Try pehrsonlodge.com on Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota. My wife and I were there twice last year and going again this year at least once most likely twice.

I would also recommend a guide, to get you going. Congradulations.

I don't know if I will take my future bride on a fishing honeymoon or not yet. Of course, when I find out who she will be, I could ask her that question, I suppose. lol I already set the date for 1/1/2003. Now I gotta start lookin'......

I know that I mentioned this for Lake Vermilion IQ a few days ago, but there are several private parties that rent out their personal cabins. Take a look at www.lakevermilion.com. They show the pics and rates. Great lake, lots of fun in the summer. Great fishing, and if you like to Jet ski-you can rent one of thiise and go forever.

Without a doubt, Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota is great and you can trust the recommendations you get here. But let me throw in a little confusion...I'm known for that on this list.

My wife and I celebrate our anniversary each year just North of Savanah, Illinois and 30 miles south of Galena, Illinois on the Mississippi River. Mississippi Pool 13 alone is 47 miles long and several miles wide. The fishing there is outstanding with many private back waters and small islands where you can be alone all day...on a weekend! Bring a digital camera! SCHWING!!!

We've been to several B&B type places that are private cabins I'd be happy to suggest. One of them is at Mississippi Palisades State Park and has some of the best trails I've ever hiked or mountain biked on. River bluffs several hundred feet high and valleys with waterfalls. Other cabins are on the shores of the river where you can pull your boat up. The entire area on both sides of the river is beautiful. And the most shocking thing is it's in Illinois only 3 hours west of Chicago. There are lots of other things to do near by but for the most part Savanah is small river town Illinois. You can rent fishing boats at Palisades and even house boats at several places in the area.

This is definitely not the north woods. But it is an experience I like to share with friends who think Illinois is a flat cornfield.

Yeah no kidding. You are one lucky man and count your blessings. Most of these city ladies around Chicago aren't into that sort of thing at all. I can't even drag my wife along on a short weekend trip to Wisconsin. The thought of going fishing on a honeymoon with her is laughable.

My suggestion is to rent a houseboat in Voyagures National Park located in northern MN. My pick would be on Rainy Lake. The boats are nice, fishing is great and the privacy is guaranteed. The staff will give you complete instructions and maps of the lake including the hot fishing spots. You tow your boat or get one from the resort. Search for Rainy Lake Houseboats.

Ohhhh...thge last post took my idea...Rent a houseboat...Consider Branson Missouri...if you like or could like the entertainment...3 days in hotel/motel 4 days on a houseboat on Lake of the Ozarks...Great place covered with restaurants...Table Rock Lake..almost the same...What a great memorable honeymoon...Also, Disneyworld...you can fish the lake with a guide...

And, finally, Hayward Wisconsin has some Four Star quality resorts condos with hot tubs...and fishing everywhere..

Good luck to both of you
