I use #6 triple gri or EGW trebles on the end of my harnesses, I have used some with two #2 single hooks and I did lose some fish, I have not lost to many with the #6's on the back, they are small enough to get sucked into the fishes mouth and get them hooked, just my observation, I'm sticking with #2's on top and #6's on the bottom.

Thats something i was thinking about trying... Kgone how do you store the treble hook harnesses? Thats the only thing im really worried about...I currently use big 1/0 hooks on my Erie harnesses and store them on a pool noodle with golf tees

I wrap them like normal on the pool noodle, them put a hook bonnet on the treble

I usually only put the treble on the last hook

With a single hook you have all the hook setting power focused on penetrating one hook.

If a treble hook has two hooks setting, the pressure is spread over the two hooks, thus having only 1/2 the penetration power of a single hook.

I have used both, and have returned to just using quality singles. Lots of people are successful with trebles, for me, it seemed I got more twists in the harness itself (especially with large Colorados), more zebra problems (LBDN area), and can't say I noticed any better hook ups with trebles.

For open water trolling you cant beat a good treble hook!! I really like a treble when using Gulp. I dont hook the treble into the Gulp worm i just let it dangle along side the worm. My catch ratio went way up!! I like either a #6 or #8 Vmc or Gamagatzu treble. Now if I'm using spinners with bottom bouncers or a presentaion near the bottom i will go to 2 single hooks so I dont hook as much junk on the bottom!!

I wrap them like a regular harness on the noodle as well, but then I just push the shank of the treble into the noodle until all three points are stickig into the noodle (sort of like pushing the treble into the noodle upside down)... works well for me.

I too only use the trebles in very clear water where I think I am getting shorter strikes... Also, when I tie up the trebles I tie them farther apart 4" instead of 2 1/2 to 3".

I'm sure trebles would really hookup. If you've ever used stinger hooks on jigs, man those little suckers catch a lot of short biters and hold tight. That said, I don't use them on harnesses because they get caught in everything - the net, carpet, fingers, zebras - they are just too much hassle. We don't seem to have a problem with short biters on the harnesses - I don't think a hungry walleye has much trouble catching and inhaling a harness with a big ole crawler on it and they're less likely to spit it out.

Are you going to troll or drift? Most times drifting I don't see an advantage to using the treble, get very good hookup rate with Gama octapus hooks. The trebles are a pain in the net!

If you think the Gams are good bob you should try the matzuo sickle style octopus hooks...Alot cheaper than the gams and very very sharp as well.

I used Gams, VMC, and Matzuo and have stuck with the Matzuo.

What size hooks do you run on your erie harnesses? Ive been using 2/0 and kinda think they might be a little big...

I'll have to give them a shot. I don't think those hooks are too big, especially if Octapus.

I figured this post would be controversial. Even the pros are split regarding the use of a trailing treble hook on harnesses. I don't use trebles on my harnesses and have no trouble getting hook ups. I do upsize my hooks for harnesses used on Lake Erie compared to smaller inland lakes. For Lake Erie I use a size 2 as the front hook and a size 1 as the rear hook. On smaller inland lakes generally a size 4 in front and size 2 as trailing hook. Haven't seen a need yet for three hook harnesses either. Two hooks which I readily recommend are the Matzuo sickle octopus hooks and also Gamakatsu octopus hooks.

Only problem i have found with the Matzuo and the Gams is when you lose the point they completly bend over. Because they are sharpened to such a fine sharp point the point of the hook occasionally bends...Usually takes quite a few fish for this to happen...

For the matzuo hooks this is "ok" since i can buy them by the 100.. But it gets a little expensive throwing away gams after 20 or so fish.

For that reason I would recomend matzuo over the gams...I was wondering about the size of the hooks every1 is using for that above reason.

Experimented with hook size and now use No. 2 Gama's for Erie. I like the Walleye Wide Gap over the Octopus as they seem to ride in the crawler a little better. I've never had one of these hooks break except when applying pressure in the wrong way with a pliers. Haven't had the problem someone mentioned with the point rolling over. They are getting pricey as I can only find them in packs of 25.

Number 2's here as well, for big Erie eyes I haven't run into any problems.
