I am planning a trip to Lake Ohae, South Dakota, I have never been there before, it is about an 8 hour drive. How about some suggestions, when to go, where to fish, where to stay. I do have a fifth wheel camper but was thinking about renting a cabin to save fuel and just pulling the boat over. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

depends on what time of year you are going. me personally i like to say in pierre and trailer up to oahe to fish. the little bend area always throws out some great fishing. there are some resorts in that area. write for some vacation info from the pierre chamber and you should be able to make up your mind. fishing is really getting good on oahe again. can't wait to get back up there myself

Hi Kevin,
You can call 1-800-445-FISH to get a South Dakota fishing report. They are still giving the snow report right now, but will start the fish report in May. I usually go to Oahe in late July/August to fish for Salmon, but there is some great walleye fishing to be had most of the year on either Oahe or Sharpe. Good luck

Lake Oahe is a very big lake. I think it stretches about 100 miles between Pierre and Mobridge and that is just part of the fishery.
The time of year when you intend to visit Oahe will make a difference as to what areas are anticipated to have the best bite. On the other hand, if you say where you want to stay you can probably get some suggestions as to the best times to be there.
Give us a little more info.

You might want to check whats going on out there before you make plans. There are some thing like four big tournaments out there in a short time frame. I think most of them are on the north end at Mobridge.

A good place to start is the Outpost Lodge on Cow Creek, on lower Oahe, during the summer months. Everybody was having a good time, guided trip or not. The fish cleaning stations were always busy. You might want to use a guide for the first trip out on the water.

If your planning an early trip like may or june mobridge is the place to be. If your planning on july or later fish in the pierre area. Go to southdakota-outdoors.com for the latest fishing reports on oahe, especially for the areas from the state line to the 212 bridge.

I have fished West Whitlock area on a few occasions and I've had good luck along the west shoreline just a couple miles north of the west whitlock boat launch. The time of year that you go would dictate, somewhat, where you should fish. The bite is generally better down by Pierre early in the year and as summer progresses, the bite moves north. Whitlock and Mobridge bite turns on in June.
Here are a couple of SD state campgrounds for you to check out. They have cabins for $35/ night but they usually go quick. The earliest you can reserve a cabin is 90 days prior to your visit. A lot of times I've seen where you need to be setting at your computer at 6am in the morning, when the SD reservation office opens, on the day 90 days prior to you arrival, in order to get a cabin.

I would get a camping spot at West Whitlock in late June or early July. Nice park with new showers, all paved. Boat ramp and fish cleaning are only a stone throws away. You can also rent a trailer at West Lock resort which is right there for gas. beer, groceries etc. The fishing is going to be great.
I'll suggest you purchase a high definition chip for your gps before you go there. With the low water, some of the tree's that used to be way below the water line approach the surface. I think it's nice to know where the channel is when your moving on plane.

I've been going out to Mobridge for the past 9 years. Fishing has been great late May thru all of June during those times. Fish quality and size has steadily inproved since I started going. I stay at the Morest Motel in Mobridge 27 rooms clean and reasonable 605-845-3668. The place is run by Denny Palmer and his wife- soon to be taken over by his daughter and her husband Brent. Both Denny & Brent are guides so it is convienent for info or their services. Denny has been on the system for decades and is well versed w/ the water and Brent is very knoledgeable and married to the masters daughter. All great people! There is a bait shop & "C" store across the street from the motel and resturants within walking distance. Across the "Mobridge" is a good launch w/ a nice campground w/ a "C" store w/ bait. Across from the campground driveway is the old dried up state launch that still has one of those nice SS cleaning stations that the Dakotas provide. There are 2 other launch sites within a few miles and a state campground. I don't think you can go wrong w/ the area. As mentioned before check the tournament schedules. Have a great time.
