catching pre spawn walleye

We are headed up to Canada for opening week (5/17) and I'm guessing the ice will not have been out very long. We've run into this only one other time several years ago and, because the walley had not started spawning yet, had a dickens of a time finding them. What are some techniques or ideas for finding walley under those conditions?

Larry, we've been up for the opener many times and have had luck pitching small jigs tipped with minnows to the shores, actually bouncing them off rocks. Talk to the bait shops near where you go to find out the colors they may like. Good luck!
