Ive fished for Walleyes for years, but from shore or wading. I recently bought a boat and want to venture into trolling. I will be using planer boards some of the time. Im looking at Berkley Vanish and Berkley Fireline. If I were to go with these 2 different lines, what # line should I use for each? I was thinking 12-14# Vanish and 20-30# Fireline. Too much, not enough? Are these good lines for trolling?

I'd pass on the Vanish, it's garbage. Good mono trolling lines are Maxima and Trilene XT 10 or 12 pound test gets most guys votes, I've used both for many years in green and have had zero failure even with drag screaming steelies and 10 pound walleye fish after fish. Great abrasion resistance, knot strenght, etc. For braid most guys including myself like power pro 30/8 or 40/10 works good, don't forget your mono backing if your using braid, only need a 150 yard spool for any trolling reel.

I second the Power Pro 30/8 with the mono backing. The reason for the mono backing is to "fill the spool" and you financially don't want to do this with Power Pro. I use 25 pound test Big Game (also a good mono for trolling/downriggers) and then add about 250 yds of the Power Pro. I use a "Blood Knot" to tie the two lines together.
This info about backing and filling the spool is assuming you are using line counter reels which you need to have full spools to get a good count on the reel.
Hope this helps!

After trolling with both - I much prefer to use a no stretch braid or fused line.
Take your pick of brands. Power pro, fire line, fusion, gorilla, or any of many others.
Depending on the fish being targeted, you can run any where from 10-30 lb braided line.
If you want to save cost, you can always fill your reel about 1/2 full with inexpensive Mono.

p.s.
If you do go with Braid - which I think is a good idea; compared to Mono - you generally should run a bit softer rod, than you might run with mono. The softer rod will give you a bit more give in the fishing system.

I use braid 100% while trolling... but like REW said... use a "softer" rod with plenty of give. Stiff rods with no stretch line equals hooks that rip out.

It sounds like some (maybe a lot?) of bad spools of this stuff
got out...
but I've been using 12# Vanish (and Transition) for about three
years now, and am not changing anytime soon.
Has always worked pulling boards for me, and I wrestled a 40#
blue cat that hit my crankbait last summer for close to an hour
with the rod bent double before boating him - what more is line
supposed to do???

I have only been trolling for a year, but I had so much trouble with vanish I took it of all my reels and am using Pline.Your right may be it was a bad batch but I know to many people that had the same problem I had tangles, line breakage, knots coming undone.Haven't had one problem with P line.
