I have been going up to Detroit for years now, but can never get a staight answer from anyone on this. Daily Michigan creel limit is 5 eyes. What is my posession limit? If I am there 3 days is it 15 fish or is my posession just a one day limit? Where do I find this rule in writing?
Thanks

The daily limit is the same as the possession limit which is 5. Technically, possession would include fish cleaned or uncleaned in your boat, vehicle, cooler, fridge, or freezer. Looking at the table on pg 8 of the Michigan fishing guide:
Bass/Walleye/Pike
The daily and possession limit is 5 in any combination with no more than 2 northern pike.
Hope this helps.

Excerpts from http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/common-terms_229752_7.pdf
Daily Limit means the total number to fish, amphibians or reptiles that you are permitted to catch and keep in one day. Also see Possession Limit.
Possession Limit is equal to the Daily Limit.
Consequently, if you catch your daily limit of walleye on day one of your trip, you will not be able to catch and keep any walleye on day two of your trip unless you had reduced the number of walleye you had in possession (e.g. ate some walleye).

You can C&R after taking your limit on day one. You just can't legally keep any more.

There was a very good thread on this very subject not long ago at the following link:

Thanks guys for your response, although I just got to read them now when I came home from Detroit. We only brought back our legal limit. Most locals I talked to aren't even aware of this rule. Most said they get out almost daily or every weekend, and just keep putting in their freezer for future fish frys.

I spent 13 years (53 to 66) fishing walleye in the western basin of Lake Erie, the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair before leaving the area for work. I can remember that a lot of guys paid no attention to possession limits. Consequently, many area freezers were packed with walleye fillets.
