You can use anything from an ultra light to an extra heavy - depending on the amount of weight being used.

This style fishing is very similar to either lindy rigging - with a light weight - or bottom bouncer fishing with a heavy weight.

If you are using a 3/8th or less - I would use a medium light rod.

If I am using a 1/2-7/8th - I would go with a medium rod.

If I was using weights over 1 oz, I would go to a medium heavy rod.

If I were over 4 ozs, I would go with a heavy action rod.

So, I think that the right rod is very dependent on the amount of weight being used for wolf river rigging.

Note:
For virtually all of my river fishing - pitching jigs, 3/ways, etc. I use a medium action rod. Most of the jigs that I am using for river fishing are 1/4 up to 3/4 oz. The medium action rods seem to work out just fine.

I find that compared to lake fishing - I am generally using a rod that is at least one and possibly two powers heavier. It seems that with the current, snags, etc. the heavier rods just work better.

Take care
