Would like to carry a back-up to the fixed radio when fishing on Erie but don't know much about all of the different brands. Any suggestions ? Thanks
I've got a Raytheon 100 that I take with me. Its fairly basic radio thats been beat around and wet and keeps on ticking. You can get an adaptor so you can take the small rubber antenna off and hook the cable from the fixed mount antenna onto the handheld for better range also.
You can usually find the radio for about $150-$160. I'm sure there are other good ones but this one has been flawless. ICOM and Standard Horizons make some you might want to take a look at. I've used those at other times with good success.

I have been using a Standard Horizon 350 for a couple of years. It is an excellent unit. The prices have been dropping and they also have a 450 out that's even smaller than mine. I like the scanning feature and the ability to use alkaline batteries if the Nicads die or you forget the 12v plug.

For Christmas this year my charming bride gave me a Raytheon 100 as a backup. For the money it has a lot of features that you will want. Good luck
