I am going to to be getting my first planer boards and after looking around I have a question. What is the advantage or disadvantage of getting the Church tx-12 vs the walleye board or off-shore? I know it's smaller and I like that because my trolling rod is a little lighter but are there any difference in how they perform or what lures they will pull? I mostly run small to midsized crankbaits for walleyes. I've used boards once before pulling deep taildancers on mille lacs and I believe they were the tx-12's, but I'm not sure. They seemed to work fine. Any opinions or suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe,
in my opinion, i'd go with the Church boards. easier to use if fishing by your self and no need to upgrade. good to go right outta the box. Offshores , you will have to spend $7 bucks or more to upgrade the clips per board.
my 2 cents.

Look at the touring pro's or watch the tournament coverage on tv. 90% all use off shore boards. There's s simple explanation, they work and they are the best.

could be because they are also sponsored by them or at least can afford all the fancy upgrades too

So you think Off Shore sponsors all the professional anglers? Like all 400? Possible but I doubt it.
If all the pros can afford the fancy upgrades wouldnt they just buy the best as money is not an issue?
Don't get me wrong, Church Boards are ok! They do have a leg up on their clip but I just think the off shore boards ride better in the water.
If you are only gonna use them once per year then maybe get the church.
I have both church and offshore, they are both good boards in my opinion and I use both. I guess its just a matter of personal preference for some guys. offshore are alittle more expensive with the upgrades and I do not see a difference in performance. both brands will do the job
we'll see ya on the water

I highly recommend the yellow Church TX-22 boards. They are relatively new so you don't hear as much about them. They run great, float perfectly upright so you can completely stall the board if you have to (or want to), come with the Church clip that most agree is better and if you don't run a tattle flag are much quicker to deploy and pull off when a fish is on with the single clip and pin system. If you do run the tattle flag, they still have all of the positives of the Offshore without having to replace the clips.
I am not sponsored by anyone. I have fished both Church and Off Shore Boards. In my oppinion, you can't beat Off Shore Boards. I have been fishing them for years and LOVE them.

Offshore or Church - whatever. They're both good products and work well. I happen to use Church boards because I like the rear pull pin.
But, why doesn't Offshore just bag the inferior clips and put the better clips on all their boards - maybe charge a few bucks more for their product and be done with it??? This would eliminate all this negativity about their clips.
All things being equal, I'd go with Church just because of Offshore's marketing strategy with their clips.
What I find interesting is that most people on this site take quick offense to getting ripped off but many don't object to giving Offshore an additional $7 or so to upgrade each new board. If this isn't a rip off what is?
Anyway, to each his own. Make your choice and be happy using what are both good products. May the planer board debate go on forever.

I replace just the front clip
It does make getting the back clip off very easy
And it's a sore spot with me
Have a bag of black clips. Now if I could just find some thing to use them for.

Manx, sounds like you "bagged" the black clips - now if Offshore would only get the message.:-)
The black clips work well for 2 oz o less open water snap weight applications. They can work as weed catchers either 6-10 ft in front of a bait or a ft under the water surface near the rod tip.
You might try putting them up for sale on the swap board. According to Offshore, there are applications where people want the releases to release. Big board applications if not in-line.

In responce to JerryA's post about being ripped off, I totally agree. I have OffShore boards and if I knew then what I know now about OffShore's clips I would have bought the Church boards to begin with and saved myself a lot of money. Go with Church you'll be glad you did.
