I've been reading the Steve Fellegy post, and what Mr. Fellegy states about sinkers and bottom dragging is interesting. I've got a scenario, and I'd like to hear how anyone here might improve on what I've been doing.

In the spring I fish a shalow bay, about 6' deep, that is mostly a mud flat. Sometimes the best thing going is just to throw a lindy rig with a Phelps floater out and drift/troll. In the past I've just let a 1/8th to 1/4 walking sinker out, fishing a five foot leader.

The sinker is dragging for sure because I want the rig away from the boat a bit, and I catch a decent amount of uneducated walleyes. How could I fish without letting the sinker drag? Maybe split shot rig? Thanks for any theories or ideas.

Fair question....
I use a 1/16 oz. bullet weight with a very long leader in those situations. UNLESS, the water is filthy dirty and the fish don't spook from the boat. I have seen that many times on Ontario brown water or dingy, wind blown water in western reservoirs. Pay attention and ENVISION what the set up is and fish accordingly. Believe it or not, in a setting like you describe, I won lots, throwing slipbobbers as I slowly moved along with the bowmount. Casting every which way, countless times. And they sunk many times!

Try a planer board with segmented leadcore? Or you can vary the size of you weight so that it doesn't drag, maybe try a worm sinker to avoid tangles in weeks. Sinker weight and speed are two variables you can play with. Once one changes so will your depth.
