I am looking for a trip in the states to take my daughter fishing the first week of August. I am mostly interested in the opportunity for a large northern. I hear this lake will provide a good opportunity for that. What area of the lake should I concentrate on? The answer to that question will help me decide what resorts and launch sites to consider. Or is the lake so generic it doesn't matter? North end near Waskish, East side, or the South side of the lake? Does the Tamarac river hold fish in the summer? Would trolling Northern baits along the weed lines be the preferred technique that time of year?

Pete Maina did a fishing show on that lake. They fished the weeds casting buzz baits. You can get the DVD here

Season 3 of their show.
Show #11: Pete Maina teams up with Esox anglers Dave Fornara and Rob Kimm to cast the shallows of Red Lake for Northern Pike during some tight window situations.

They have been catching a lot of big ones near the Tamarack River. Don't know if that will hold for August - ask resorter for best area.
Last summer, in the same time period, there were nice northern caught close to the tamarak river. We stayed at the state park - they have reasonable rates on sleeper cabins that were very comfortable if your going to cook yourself. They have a bathhouse for showers.
Become familiar with the reservation boundary, non natives are not allowed on the reservation - if you did not know.

I'd consider hiring a guide if you've never fished Red before. It's a big lake, with lots of water to cover. And it can get mean in a hurry. Check out http://outdoorswithjonnyp.com/ Jonny has a lot of experience on the lake. He knows it well.
