Perferably east would fit me. Big rivers are a little intimidating to me, any tips pointers?

Brushy creek, Big creek, Clear Lake, along with Rathbun and Saylorville on the Des Moines River. Three Mile and Twelve Mile lakes south of Des Moines. The Mississippi is the best however and is a first class fishery. That covers some locations from the middle of the state east and a bit north and south. Google Iowa DNR for some other ideas.

Forgot to mention to check out "fishing the midwest" on WC. Good conversation there and Bob Jensen would answere your questions well.

Don't let the Mississippi scare you. It can be intimadating at first but is easily navigated. Go up to Prairie De'Cheun and Linksville up by the dam and you juuuust might reconsider a Canada trip. Run up to Red Wing after ice out and you will think you ARE in Canada.
