Looking at getting a good deadstick rod. Unsure of what length I want to go, what is your preference on the length. Thinking about the BPS Walleye Angler 12' or there 8'6. Also since I really like Jason Mitchells rods thinking about his 8' telescoping rod.

Check out the 10'6" Scheels Pro Classic. It comes in Medium or Med Heavy. Both will work, depending on how you want to use it. The MH will also double as a Lead Core puller.
I love the PVC handle for going in and out of rod holders with out wrecking the rod.

I actually broke my slip bob rod and I'm in the same boat as you. The two rods you mention are the rods I was also looking at. I think I'm going to get the BPS 8'6". BPS has been nothing but good to me, I've broken BPS equipment in the past due to abuse, I'm a bit rough on equipment. They've always taken care of me and sent me replacements in a prompt manner. BPS for me, I just wish the word bass wasn't in their name.

I live close to a place that Jason allows over the counter warranty too, so thinking on going that way.

I've used an old downrigger rod; I've also used a "bass fisherman's" flippin' stick. The former is 8' long, the castring rod is 6'6" or so long.

Most places that handle Jason Mitchells rods allows for on site warranty replacement. If the store happens to be out of that model, a quick call usually gets one shipped direct to you in a couple of days.
I am a big fan of his ice rods too, and warentied one at Gander Mountain in Fargo after a mishap in Canada.

Try a steel head rod for a dead stick rod.
Nice soft moderate action, but plenty of butt strength.
The same thing is true for a bobber rod.
Lots of different models and makes on the market.
Take care
