Depends on what you consider "cheap", but my vote would be for a Shimano Symetre. They are smooth, cast well, and you should be able to find them on sale now for around $70 at major sporting goods stores now. Of course, their are less expensive models than this, but these have worked well for me.

You can pick up some spinning reels for under $10.00 that will work fine for walleye. But try to make sure you don't catch something that you will make that reel regret it! I use a Stradic and all my other reels are in the $30.00 or so range but those are for people that go fishing with me that have no equipment. I would spend the extra money if you can. I just caught an 8 3/4 lb Walleye while casting last year and am very happy I had the reel that I did.

Reddog,
If you have a gander mountain in your area, you might check them out.
They have their own line of imported reels that are actually pretty good.
You can pick up a decent one for $20-$30. 4 or 5 ball bearings, antilock drag etc.

Take care

Not cheap, but my Shimano Stradics have been bulletproof over many years. If you don't want to drop that amount of coin - Symetre.

The Daiwa Exceler is probably a better reel than the Symetre. I have both and the Symetre's I have have been good reels but they have their quirks. I think The Exceler is better . . lighter, smoother.

And the $40-$50 ones with 10 ball bearings are smoooooooooth and so far have lasted for us through decent walleye and smallie. We were surprised, but really like them.

I also have some older ABU spinning that are pretty decent, not sure of name, they are my cabin rods/reels and get abused.

Good luck,

The Gander Mountain Tournament Series reels (GST) are 10 bearing reels and hold up very well. I have several, 25, 30, 35, 40 class reels in the GST line.

The half sizes are a dead giveaway to whom makes them. They are made by Pflueger, for Gander.

The 5-6 and 7 bearing models are great values too. Many of these are on sale or on clearance right now, and a bargain for sure.

Take a look at the Abu Garcia Cardinal 300 series. 301 or 302. They run around $35 and are pretty bullet proof.

I picked up 2 of these over the winter. They are working out just fine. Drag is very smooth.

Not sure where you're located, but the Cabela's in Hammond IN has the Mitchell 300xge, 308xge and the 310xge for around $40.00, the xe models are under $30.00.

Best really cheap spinning reel on the market is the Shakespeare Alpha. Only one bearing but still a nice, smooth, dependable drag and the drag setting stays where you put it without creeping. $10.00 to $20.00 depending on the size and where you buy it. A140 or A150 for walleyes and similar sized fish. Larger for catfish, etc. Ultra light size is also good for ice fishing. For the money one can afford to carry spare reels.

I would reccomend the shakespeare Infinity, selling for around 25 bucks. Although I don't have one , I still have 3 out of 4 shakespeare Intrepids in operation that sold for about the same ammount, have 4 bearings instead of the infinity's five bearings and have stood up to the runs of many sturgeon during winter's ice fishing. It was a great way to help fill my rod box without buying all high end reels.

I love the Shimano Symetre's , as a matter of fact I took the last one out of the box and put it on a new rod Friday. I need to go buy a few more before they end up like everything good...........

I have a stradic 1500 that has been very problematic over the years. Line ate into the graphite in the bail around the line roller and line would catch on the grooves and cause tangles at first, and as time went on the line began getting shredded or just plain cut. I ordered a new bail, and after replacing it the performance was decent for a while until the line roller (new one...) froze and the line twist became such an issue I gave up on the reel. Since then, shimano clearenced out the older stradics and I stocked up. I dont like the new design (they feel rough new and broken in); so I'm glad I bought a few before they were gone. I also have a sahara 750 that the bail spring failed on within about 3 months.
