View Full Version : Kashabowie Outfitter Guide question?
I just returned from what I thought would be the hunt of a lifetime. I booked a moose hunt with Kashabowie Outfitters in Atikokan, Ontario for which I paid a great deal of money. The outfitter did provide all necessities as promised. The cabin was outstanding. Boats and motors were clean and worked well. The aircraft was well maintained and the flight was perfect. But, that is where the good news stops. Our outfitter informed me that our guide had never hunted or seen the area we were to be hunting (Lake Tommyhow). I was further informed by the outfitter that the guide was to have gone to the hunting area and scouted 3 weeks prior to our arrival, however due to circumstances he had not made the flight and had never seen the area. My hunting partner and I are both upset by this as we did not see a moose during our entire hunt. Our "guide" would use an axe or chainsaw to cut trails between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and then ask us to hunt that area that evening. We were just wondering if we were justified in asking the outfitter for a free return hunt as his services were not as promised? He stated that we would have an experienced guide and that we would see moose, we had neither. We're both taking a little time to cool off and compose ourselves and see how others feel before we confront our outfitter. Your opinions are welcome.

Had the same kind of stuff pulled on us by Fern. Suppose to be a remote hunt and when they flew us into Kershaw Lake just west of Tommyhow the road was open and we were surrounded by local peope with ATV's and trucks and had camps set-up around us and we had no place to hunt because we were flown in. Needless to say we have never going back and that was after many years of going out on fly-in trips with Kashabowie Outfitters when they were on Shebandowan Lake and Brian Wiley owned it until his death and then Dave and Jerry Sutton owned it When Fern got involved in it it went downhill.

They know that once they have your money, they have you, at least for that trip. They get no return business, but they are just trying to make the quick buck, so what. They know that you have little recourse legally because it costs you more money to go after them. Then they use some sort of lame grey area excuse and get off anyway. I am a slow learner, twice I got stung booking a hunt with Lois Buttray out of Pennsylvania. The last one was with Horseshoe Hill Outfitters in Quebec. He owes me 600 because I did not see a moose. I had 3 hostile encounters with local residents because I was on the wrong property. Five of us should have recieved refunds the first week and I don't know what happened the second week with those hunterss because the outfitter won't respond to calls or e-mails.
Like everyone tells me do your research and talk to unsuccessful hunters from the outfitter to hear the true story. My hunt was the first for this outfitter in that area, although he has bear hunted there for a few years.
Oh yeah, go to this website and others and let fellow hunters know about these lame outfitters.
