A friend and I were talking a few weeks ago while pre-fishing for a tournament and we both have a strong desire to do a moose hunt. I have always wanted to head way way north to the Alaska parts for the Yukon variety but it would make more sense economically to try a hunt in Canada first. They seem a bit more reasonable from an expense level and most of the people I talk with who go up there seem to have good hunts. I'm not sure whether I'd rather do a bow or gun hunt, I'm pretty deep into bowhunting but may just opt for gun hunting the first time to see what its all about and my friend only rifle hunts. If any of you guys have recommendations on where to start putting a hunt together or know of good guide services who put up quality hunt from quality camps and are reasonably priced(I don't mind paying more to get better service in better area's with better animals)I'd appreciate any feedback you have. I'm located in Western Montana so would love to find something in BC or Alberta or Sask. but will consider where ever the best hunts can be had. What should one expect to pay for a good hunt from a camp with good accomidations and food as well as good animal density and average to above average sized bulls? Thanks for the help, RJ in Montana..

I've done alot of research into moose hunting in north america, and one of the bigest hurdles is the requirement to hire a guide if your a nonres. There are 2 exeptions Alaska & Ontario. BUT... In Ontario you need to be "outfitted" by an "outfitter". Alaska is the only place that I've found that a nonres can truely do it yourself, but the moose numbers are not all that high due to all the bears and wolves. Also, some of the "good" areas may be draw.

Hope this helps.

Hey Rob -

I have a buddy in Billings that guides in Alaska for about 3 weeks each fall. More caribou and bear, but he also went to Alberta on a moose hunt about 3 years ago. I have an email into him. Shoot me an email and I should have the info for you tonight.

Honsie

PS Congrats on the nice finish in the WA circuit...

Hi Dan, I will pass on any info I can come up with. Since this has started I've come up with a few good leads. Will be a good winter research project. I also learned a close friend of my sister and brother in law works on the North Slope and his family has a fishing lodge on a major drainage in Alaska and would be happy to talk with me. I may have to reconsider going farther North?? Thanks, RJ
