I purchased a bolt action rifle in the 284 Winchester caliber several years ago. Finally getting around to zeroing the rifle in. Been using 140 grain Nosler Ballistic tips with IMR 4350 powder and Federal 201 primers. I am not getting the tight pattern I had hoped for. Have tried 51 gr to 55 gr and the results should be better.
Has anyone tried Varget powder with this caliber/bullet weight?
Would like some suggestions from the handloader crowd on this site.
PS - the barrel is 22 inches long with a 1 / 10 twist.
Thanks

Welcome to the .284 Winchester world. They were notorious for being wild.
The most inaccurate gun I ever owned was a .284 Winchester automatic.
I sold it to a California hunter passing through.
sounds like it time to try a another brand of bullet. I went thru 5 before I would one my 280 liked. Abe1

Just an update.
I switched to Winchester 760 powder and my whole world improved.
I am getting really good patterns now and am in the process of fine tuning the number of grains of powder.
T-Mac - the rifle I am working with now is a custom bolt action. Brought it ten years ago and am finally getting around to breaking it in for my first trip out West - been an awlful long wait.
I do own a Winchester M100 in the 284 caliber that has been a good shooter with factory ammo. I guess every gun has it's own personally.
Thanks to you and Abe1 for responding.
Leaving October 19 and feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas.

Good deal.
I had a 100...and I never could get it to shoot. And the 100 was known for being a sprayer. Of course, I'm sure not every one was wild like mine.
I shouldn't have said what I said. There are, for a fact, some very accurate guns out there in .284 caliber.
Sounds like you are getting yours dialed in.
