I will be making my first, of hopefully many, trip out west this fall. I want to make certain I have all my i's dotted and t's crossed. I'll be hunting the 2nd rifle season in the SW part of Colorado. Other than the obvious items...gun, compass, maps, knives, game bags. What does your gear list look like. Thanks in advance to all that post.

chest freezer, binoculars, bullets, I have forgotten bullets before
Give me some more info. Will you be hunting w/ a guide? How far will you be from a town? Are you packing in or car camping? Think about a water filtration system and purifaction pills (take both!). If you are far away from civilization, you may want to consider a satelite phone and a basic 1st aid kit. Wet wipes also come in very handy.

Stu, we'll be 35 miles from the closest town which is about an hour and a half drive. We're taking two rigs and pulling two tent trailers. We'll use those as the base camp and hike out each morning and return to the truck each night. If I have a water filter I shouldn't need to use the purification pills. Right?
Walleye250, we'll be hunting elk the 2nd rifle season (Oct 21-29).
I ALWAYS take purifacation pills in case my filter breaks. Also, take a GPS unit, if you can get one. Nylon cord comes in handy too. I took powdered water once, but I couldn't figure out what to add to it. Good luck - Stu

GPS is great, make sure you have a map and compass and know how to use it. If you get in heavy canopy you will loose signal. I love my gps, but I would give it up in a heart beat over a compass and map. Just make sure you know the declination for the area you are in. Western states have significantly more devation from Grid north than mid western states.
Good luck
GF.
