My son and I are going, NW SD. We will be out there October 5th-8th. I hear they are numerous this year. Was last out there for the prairie goats 2 years ago.

My 14 year old son got drawn for a Wyoming archery tag and we went over Labor Day weekend. He shot a really nice 76 3/8" buck. I've got a rifle tag and am heading back to Gillette October 5th. I need to shoot a bigger one than his or I'll never hear the end of it. I can hear him now, "You couldn't shoot a bigger one than mine and you had a rifle?" This could be painful.

Pronghorn are very good to eat but will differ from the deer venison you are probably used to.

But...the secret to good tasting pronghorn is to get the hide off of them just as quickly as possible and get the meat cleaned and on ice. Don't let the outside of the hide come into contact with the meat if you can help it. And don't do what I see so many hunters do and that is to drive 400+ miles home with a stack of antelope carcasses stacked on top of each other in the back of the truck. I can guarantee you the meat will acquire a taste if you do this. If the weather is cool, you can get away with this but if it is warm-hot, get the hide off quickly. It doesn't take long to skin and quarter one of these critters.

Thanks for the info . Here in Ohio I do exactly what you stated . I skin our deer and process them myself within an hour after it is shot . Good luck hunting

All I can say is WY seems to be a petting zoo gone bad . I have never seen so many deer and pronghorn . I had 3 pronghorn tags and one mule deer tag all were filled in 2 days . What a pretty State WY is , breath taking .

I got my buck. It was fun. I love antelope hunting. Could do without so many cactus and rattlesnakes.

My son and I filled all 4 tags, 2 bucks and 2 does. Had a great hunt with some good (cool) weather for once. He bagged a 14" buck and mine was about 12.5". We even stopped at Gettysburg on the Missouri River on the way home for a little fishing too. A great trip!!!
