: Canadian Bear Hunters
Rose_Cliff Lake 12-30-2007, 11:25 AM Have you hunted in Northwestern Ontario in the last few years? How did you do? In your opinion, were there more or less bear than usual?
I would appreciate any input because 2008 will be our first year with a 10x10 bear management area and it hasn't been hunted in a number of years.
We would like to know the above so we can determine how many hunts to schedule. We DO NOT want to over-harvest.
This, of course, is not the only research that we're going to do, but just one venue for opinions.
Thank you, Rose
Are on Cliff Lake Noth Of Vermilion Bay?
Rose_Cliff Lake 01-02-2008, 11:06 AM Yes we are. Do you have any input for me? Rose
Actually no. But when Cliff Lake popped up it made me curious. My Dads cousin used to own Larsen's Lost Bay Resort and we used to go up there every Summer.
Sorry just brought back some great memories for me.
Ivy
Rose_Cliff Lake 01-02-2008, 11:59 AM What a small world, yes, it's the same place. Do you have any stories to share about the fishing or anything else for that matter?
Would you send me and e-mail roseengelke@yahoo.com
Thank you, Rose
Limiterr 01-07-2008, 01:29 PM Bear are through the roof in a lot of areas. We hunt in the Upsala area and see them on a regular basis. Moose predation on calves is very high. Shoot all you want........
Rose_Cliff Lake 01-08-2008, 03:46 PM Thanks...anyone else on this topic??? Rose
meese 01-15-2008, 08:35 AM Hello from the north. I've lived in Northern Ont my whole life, and while I can't be sure if there's actually more bears, I can tell you I've been hearing about more and more encounters this past year than I can ever remember. They've been walking into towns and cities and lot lately, perhaps that suggests there's a bit of an increase? Maybe they're just getting a little more used to us.
Rose_Cliff Lake 01-15-2008, 11:49 AM Thank you for the feedback. Were any people hurt?
BearHunter1 01-29-2008, 09:25 PM Hi Rose,
The real people you should be asking are at the local MNR office. They will have the figures you need, and you may in fact be limited by them about the number of tags you will be allowed. I have heard 1 bear per 50 sq km. is the norm.
You should be checking with them before you go and book hunts you may not be able to have.

I just wanted the opinion of the people who hunt the area. Since the spring hunt was eliminated, some believe there's too many bear in the area and are taking out too many moose calves.
We are only doing 4 hunters this year and yes, we have talked to the MNR.
Sometimes it's the actual hunters who are the eyes in the woods that can share more hands-on info. That's why I posed the question.
Limiterr 01-30-2008, 06:00 PM I put up a large cow Moose in the spring this past year. Only caught a glimpse of her when I was out for a quad ride. A little up the road I came upon a very large black bear with its head down right on the road. It did not hear me it was so intent on what it was looking at. I stood up and yelled and the bear took off. I went to see what he was looking at....You guessed it..the fresh track of the cow I had just put up a little ways back.....
Limiterr 10-20-2008, 12:50 PM Another Bear story...One of our hunting party in NW Ontario had to fire a round over a large black bear while hunting Moose this fall. The bear kept walking to 5oFt of him untill he fired the shot. The bear paid no notice to him swinging his arms and standing up. We don't hunt bear but the sign in the Upsala area as well as wolves we saw makes me wonder how a calf or Moose can survive.
Rose_Cliff Lake 10-22-2008, 02:21 PM That had to be scary. We had a small, and I mean small bear around our camp, early summer. Maybe 60 lbs. or so and that was enough for me personally. I'd come around a corner and there he/she was. I don't know which of us jumped higher. We saw it every day for a few weeks. It even went throught the screen into a cabin and took a loaf of bread and some candy bars. We figured we'd have to do something about it but when the berries came out and we never saw it again.
Any luck on your moose hunt?
Limiterr 11-06-2008, 07:52 PM We saw 5 Moose in a week of hunting. We took 1 animal. It was tough hunting because of the warm weather and a lot of hunters in the bush. I spent some time fishing in the warmth and did well for Walleye.
We're back again in 2 weeks for a winter hunt. Our group has 1 tag left.
