Yes, pixels are a major factor in clarity. Resolution is typically referenced by lines, both horizontal and vertical. TV's, PC monitors and fish finders are listed in that maner for quick comparisons. 1024x768 and 1280x1024 are the resolution of some of the better PC monitors today as an example.
Earlier CGA monitors (The first color) were 480x240, EGA went to 640x480 and early VGA was 800x600. The picture represnted on the screen was scanned to the screen in those lines. The more lines the finer the image. Additinoally, some PC monitors also list the DPI (Dots per inch) which also effect resolution on the focus level. But for your purpose, compare the basic Horz/Vert lines for better clarity. Typically the more lines the smaller the dot, depending on the size of the screen, of course. But that is another factor all together.
160x160 is low and 240x240 is better, but some of the newer LCD screens are up around 240x360(Portrait) and 350x480(Landscape).
As with any quality issue, resolution cost more.

I was at a seminar recently given by Keith Kavajecz. His opinion was that you should not buy anything with less than 240 VERTICAL pixels. This is your resolution from top to bottom and will provide better pictures of what is under your boat. The horizontal number is just basically how wide to screen is and how long the picture is there for you to view.
(AQUA, how do you know all this stuff? Are you a T.V. repair man?lol)

Been selling used computers and equipment since 1990. Owned a couple of companies that did service, repair and sales on those used items for 8 of those years and still selling the stuff today. Looking for a change, though. Starting a Deck & Remodeling Consrtuction company after 10 years of fooling around on evenings/weekends. Every neighbor in my hood has a new deck, basement, bathroom or 4 season room at my hand. Need one? <grin>

My fishing partner and his brothers are all carpenters. REAL carpenters!<grin> Had my major house remodel job done a few years back by them and I'm not planning anything for quite some time if I have any say in the matter. My wife might argue that, but it ain't gonna happen. Good Luck in your new venture and keep the weekends open for fishing. All work and no play makes aqua just a man.
