Considering taking a job in the Helena area. Is there decent goose hunting around there? What about pheasant?

I've lived in Helena for 20 years. I used to build drift boats and fly fish. When the flyfishing thing exploded, I bought a YarCraft and started chasing walleyes on the area reservoirs. Problem is, I still catch mostly stinking trout.

The goose hunting around here can be outstanding. The best is late season when the lakes and ponds freeze over, and if you get yourself a jetboat, you can run the Missouri. Some of the nearby grainfields are pretty good to if you knock on ranchers doors.

Pheasants are not as good as the Dakotas but I've had some pretty decent hunting within an hour or hour and a half drive. Montana has great pheasant hunting in the eastern half of the state.

So, after living in Montana for 25 years I'm moving to Minneapolis. At least I don't expect to catch as many stinking trout while I'm walleye fishing.

In the immediate area:
Fair to good on geese.
Poor to non-existent on pheasants.

In Montana, we drive.

There is good hunting for about anything- - big game, waterfowl and upland birds within two hours of Helena. Most folks who moved to the Helena area (including me) did so because it is located centrally, to very good hunting and fishing.
