OK GUYS IN TODAYS PAPER A GUY FROM TOWN HERE SET THE NEW PA RECORD FOR SAUGEYE AND AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT HE GOT IT BEHIDE MY HOUSE???BUT THEN I CAN'T CATCH FISH SITTING AT HOME...AND THE RIVER IS THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER ....HE GOT HIS FISH AND THE NEW RECORD FISH ON TUB JIGS THE SAME TYPE YOU WOULD USE TO SMALLIE FISH WITH!!GO FIGURE...
OK HERES THE CATCH..D.N.R SAID THERE IS NO SAUGEYE IN THE SUSKY RIVER(WRONG) AND THEY AMIT TO THAT(NOW)..THEY SAID IT HAD TO GET THERE FROM LAKE ERIE OR THE ALLEGHENY RIVER EITHER WAY ITS ONE ##### OF A LONG SWIM...ABOUT 200 MILES...THE OLD RECORD WAS 3.8 POUNDS AND THE NEW ONE IS 4.11 POUND? DOESN'T THAT SEEM SMALL FOR THAT FISH OR WHAT..TO BE HONEST I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TELL YOU THE DIFF...IN THESE FISH.WALLEYE/SAUGEYE BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW..ALSO THEY SAID THE FISH WAS SPAWNING..IF THIS HELPS OUT THE GUY JOE WITH THE POST SAUGEYE..ASKING IF THEY SPAWN..OK JUST FIGURE I PASS THIS ON...JEERY

Long swim???? don't you mean walk??? None of these waters connect. Just like our PA fish commision to know exactly what swims and what doesn't swim in the lakes and rivers. Last spring I boated a 30 inch northern on the first day of trout. The fish commision biologist was doing a creel survey at the launch. When I told him what we caught, I was informed that there are no northerns in the lake that it must have been a musky or a grass pickeral. When I described the fish to him I was told that it must have just looked like a pike but wasn't because there aren't any in the lake.....

Saugeye are smaller than Walleye but larger than the Sauger and is a result of inbreeding Walley and Sauger artificially in hatcheries or in natural environments.

You'll notice that it is more difficult to tell a Sauger from a Saugeye then either from the Walleye. Sometimes, VERY difficult!

Another interesting thing, there is no State record catagory for "Saugeye" on this web site for the Fish and Boat Commission? Odd!!

Yes that saugeye does seem small for a state record.
Here in Kansas the state record is 9.81 lbs and 28.5 inches.
It was caught in November of 1997. If that fish would have
been caught in April full of eggs imagine what it would have
weighed.

That wasn't to correct you, just sharing info. This State DOES HAVE Saugeye but I found it ODD ;-) that the State doesn't have a catagory for the Saugeye record! Took ME by surprise!

Jerry, It probably came out of Raystown Lake. I have caught sauger thers and just below in the Juniata River. Still a long swim, but there aren't any sauger in these waters either, lol.
I wonder if a Sauger fingerling or two could have been mixed into a batch of walleye fingerlings and not noticed when stocking...

hey hunter..i was just reading about raystown when i read your post..i been looking into fishing there for the past couple of years..can you give me any input on it is it worth fishing??i know its a hot striper lake.. but what about the other types of fish..we have a store in altoona and i guess its not to far from there??ok let me know ............thanks

A few years back a friend of mine pulled a 9lb 6oz what looked to be a smallmouth out of Sandy Lake in Mercer county. If it would have been a smallmouth he would of had state record.He noticed the fish had a green tint to it, and a black lateral line as well as all the characteristics of a smallmouth.It turned out to be a cross between largemouth and smallmouth. The PFC told him that there are no state record categories for hybrids.Maybe this is why there is no state record available for the saugeye.The funny thing is if you look up Pa's state record fish you wiil see a state record for hybrid striped bass. BT, hate to burst your bubble, but saugeyes, like most hybrids are sterile and don't reproduce. They are stocked as put & take only.

By sterile do you mean that they do not produce eggs and sperm, or that the eggs are infertle. Also does the hybrid lack the instinct to seek out spawning habitat in the spring?I know that they don't reproduce, just wondering about the details?????????? Ray

The lake is pretty low now, down about 16 ft. If it goes dowm another foot or so all the launches will close. I think it is worth fishing. The lake holds quite a few quality fish. Recreational boat pressure is high all summer. Spring and fall are best times to fish. The lake is about 45 minutes from Altoona on your side if you are running on rt 22. Stripers and bass are the big draw for fisherman. The lake has a population of eyes too, but I just cannot seem to catch any small ones. When I hit fish they are 3-5 pounders. I have seen the 8+ pounders but not in my boat. Fich commission busted two guys gigging eyes on the spawn last year with 13 fish between 10 and 14 lb. I'm not the expert of the lake or a guide, but if you are going to make a trip email me and I'll give you a heads up.
