Since I sold my place in the UP last year I'm going to hunt the shotgun zone in lower Mi for the first time in about 30 years.
I just bought a rifled barrel for my Mod 500 12Ga Mossburg pump, I see rifled slugs on the market, are they made to use in a smooth bore to create spin on the slug or are they for rifled barrels?
Thanks in advance.

Bill, you will want to try sabots. Rifled slugs are for smoothbores. I have been using the Lightfield sabots and they are great.

As mentioned. Use Sabots with a rifled bore.
I use the Winchester Partition Gold. They kick a little bit but you have a 150+ yd gun.
If I was drive hunting I am not sure you would need all that power.
Stand hunting with a scope? I'd use the the Winchesters.

I tried like crazy yesterday afternoon to get some consistent groups and now I see why I was having such a problem. Riffled slugs through a riffled barrel...no good. Thanks guys
Alan,
I got my 870 Express slug barrel from Mallard Sporting Goods, Mallard, Ia. I will try and get a phone number for you if you are interested. This is the type of gun shop where there are no locks on the guns and the amo is lying all over but he can usually get what you need if doesn't have it on the wall. I guess without Nordquist around you got left high and dry.

Cool, thanks for the replies guys, I got my rifled barrel at Cabelas online for about $150.00, it has an intrigrated scope mount which I purchased a Simmons 1.5-5x32 scope for, will be sighting it in this weekend and hunting Thanksgiving weekend.
PS: just noticed I posted in the small game forum, DOH!!!!

And nobody even cared, Bud. :)
But... you must now promise to shoot a small deer ONLY.
LOL!

I just figured you liked your rabbits tender and already skinned when you got to them, plus I was very happy about finding a solution as well. I was getting ready to spit nails after my groups on Sunday.

At about $2.25 a shell, shighting in with these high powered slugs could get expensive, would it make sense to get it "on the paper" at 100 yards with some lower priced slugs and dial in the last few shots with the loads I will hunt with?

Last Sunday I tried to do just that. I used Federal slugs and started at 50 yrds. I had an old winter coat on top of a 12" diameter fence post to rest on(it wasn't moving). I could put two shots in a 7" group but it was a 1' low and 6" to the left. I made an adjustment and fired two more shots at my 3' square of cardboard, one lands a 1' high and the other is 18" low and both were on opposite sides of the cardboard. Next 2 shots with no adjustment would be in a 7" group again but to the left or right. I tried Winchester slugs as well with the same results.....NO consistency. I went through 3 boxes of each brand and I couldn't get anything going that I felt confident enough would not grossly wound an animal. Your results my differ but I was getting discouraged before the guys here started posting on what should be done. I could have bought 2 boxes of sabots for what I spent on 6 boxes of riffled slugs.
I'm not posting this to complain about Winchester and Federal, I think they have great products when used for the correct application.
My .02 and good luck to you.
You could have the gun bore sighted and then just shoot the good slugs. Lightfields are $1.55 a piece. I don't have stock with them, I just think they are a great slug for less money than alot of the sabots on the market. They will take a deer down in it's tracks. Makes for easy tracking.

Considering the area I will be hunting (Huron County) I probabaly won't have 150 yards between the no tresspassing signs to be able to take a shot that long LOL.
I purchased a laser bore sighter when I purchased the scope, thanks for all the advice guys.
