I finally had a great shot at a tom in WI, nice one, maybe 8 inch beard. I thought he spotted me, and I jumped the gun, and shot over him as he started to run away. He was actually, I found out from my buddy minutes later, totally decoyed and just running from the decoy he just attacked, and he would have come back again. He wasn't looking at me, but I thought he had me spotted, and there were hens and jakes so close to me that I thought they made me as well.

Heh, well, it was my first shot at a turkey and I blew it. But it was so exciting I could not believe it. I have seen turkeys out hunting before but never had the opportunity for a shot. This was soooo cool. I am looking forward to next year, as I can't go anymore this year. Thank goodness the opener is near, so I can at least take out my frustration by catching some eyes... hopefully ;)

Missing a turkey is more humbling than missing a deer or ducks or geese, that is for sure. You think you should be able to hit a turkey no problem... heh.

Don't be too hard on yourself. If you called a Tom close enough to shoot at, you got the best part of the hunt.----Turkey meat is cheep, that memory will be with you for a long time. And the next time you tell that story, that tom will have a 10 inch beard.

I have looked at this post several times wanting to reply.
Three women, having completed their hunter safety course in April, were blessed with the honor of being guided by 2 NWTF employees during May in PA. We were in eastern PA and the turkeys were everywhere!
Never having hunted before, none of us were sure what would actually take place. Would we be able to pull the trigger or give in to our emotions and let him walk on by???
2:3 love to fish, but hunting is different.
Let me tell you...(I probably don't have too)...what a thrill to be out before dawn, owl calling, hearing them gobble, fly down, hoping to get them to come in, watching them go another direction, attempt to cut them off, sit down, crow call, have them answer, hear them, watch them strut, gobble and purrr...oh my.
The actual "harvest" is the icing on the cake but, oh, what a rush to call, track, call, anticipate their next move, call some more, then have them come in...I harvested mine on 5/20/05. I am still on cloud nine!!
What an awesome experience!
You'll get him next year!!!

Congrats Turkey Girl! Both on beginning your hunting and on bagging your bird! I am truly happy that you had such a good time. I hope you continue to have good times afield, and give duck and goose hunting a chance - very fun as well, and plenty of shooting, and missing, ha!

It is more of a rush than most would think when the turkeys come in, and you get all nervous that they see you... hehe... yep, I will get him next year, but I will never make fun of people who miss anymore ;) hehe

Box and Turkey Girl,
Welcome to "The Flock", Turkey Hunting is the ultimate challenge. I started last year 2004 and got blanked in all aspects. Did alot of reading and video prep for the 2005 season and it all came together.
God Blessed me with a perfect hunt back on April 30th. The wood were alive with Turkeys and they were ready to come to the call. My bird went 21.5 lbs, 9.5" beard and 1" spurs. What an awesome experience!!! I was on a "Turkey High" for the better part of a month. I tried to put my youngest son a bird the last 2 days of our Ohio season to no avail. Our season closed May 15th but I couldn't get the Turkey switch turned off and the Walleye switch on for a good 2 weeks. Finally I'm thinking Lake Erie Walleye again. I truly love to Walleye fish but come Spring Time it's Turkey 1st.
