I have not used Lowrance but I am considering a X15. I have several Garmin units which I like. My stand alone is a 162. They have just came out with several new units that offer impressive features. Look for how many waypoints you can store as well as how many routes with the capacity of waypoints on each route as well as pixel count and other specifications you desire. My 162 has 2.5MB of extra memory for detailed mapping info. Newer units have either built in memory or MMC cards. With Garmin you will need additional software for detailed customized mapping. Garmin's software is Mapsource on a CD. Garmin has also contracted with Fishing Hotspots for propriatory mapping detail showing contour lines, river channel, and other under water structure. Lowrance includes their mapping detail CD with the unit but you can also buy after market software. Before buying, look at all the features you would like and what software is included and extra. The technology is changing fast and improving by leaps and bounds each year. It can get costly but it is a great tool and great fun to play with and use. Both Lowrance and Garmin have good web sites with lots of information. Lowrance even has demo software you can download to try out all of the features in a simulator mode. Good luck in your decision.

I would go with a Garmin 182. They are a sweet unit and you can get the mapsource FHS maps and the blue-charts for the great lakes which have great detail. good luck!
