Chased after Sharptail this weekend for the opener. It felt good to get out and hunt. Saw a few birds, but only got two shots. Of course, had to miss both of them. At least I got that out of the way for the season.

So, no birds for the opener. I did get my young pup out and let him work a bit. First hunt, I got skunked and the dog met his first porcupine, not too bad though. Just all over one foot. Beautiful point on the porcupine though. :-)

I didn't realize prairie grouse opened over the weekend!

As a newcomer to Wyoming, I'm trying to get up to speed (permits, seasons, units, etc.). I'm between Sheridan and Big Horn and need to unlimber the O/U.

I did see my first sharptail in the area last week during an evening drive. Some young birds were walking along the shoulder of a gravel road, and really didn't want to fly.

Good luck to all,

So I'll miss the Wyoming opener when I'm in Nebraska this coming weekend?

Well, maybe I'll have to run up to some of my old stomping grounds in the Sandhills and see if any sharpies or chickens are fluttering about. From what I've seen so far, there may be a few more birds in those grasslands than in this part of Wyoming.

I also saw quite a few sharptail in the evenings driving across South Dakota on Hiway 212 this past summer.
