View Full Version : Pheasant hunt
Just got back to Indiana from opening weekend in Iowa. I thought next year that I might head to South Dakota mid-week, hunt there then hunt in Iowa Saturday , Sunday opening weekend.
Any thoughts on a good place to wild bird hunt in S.D. I have 2 pointers that will be 19 months old.
Or is it better to hunt in S.D. later in the year for Pheasants? i.e after the pressure of opening week?

Ivy,
We usually hunt both the opener and then go back later in the season. The wife likes the opener, I like the later hunt. Last year we ended up going the second time during the big ice storm they had. It was really tough on the the dogs. Wife swore she would never go back out late season again, but I notice she has a short memory. When you get out there pick up one of the public hunting pamplets. It will show all the walk in hunting areas that are leased for public hunting. About half are pretty good.
Thanks.
Next year my G.S.P.'s will be 1 -1/2 and more ready for a trip like that.

What are you offering? Is this a wild bird hunt or a Pet and Shoot?
do you have lodging? Is this hunt on private land or public?

Wild Birds and wild birds only (actually we shot 2 of our neighbors released birds on accident)
over 25,000 acres, lodging, very very few outfitters in SD do what we do. How many references do you want?
Bird numbers are down slightly this year but we are still getting limits every day. Have to work for them but that is hunting. If anyone is telling you they are limiting out in 2 to 3 hours, I will guarantee they are released pen raised birds.

Mike I will call you. I'm not so sure I would use the Guarantee word so much because I hunted one of Dick Stillie(Sp)lodges and limited out in less then 1 hr. on wild birds with a 1yr. old pup over point never shot a shot over a wild flush on the last day of the hunt in the same field we blew up days before.I know my birds pretty well and these where not pen raised birds. Thanks again for the reply.

I was at a wedding dance and there was 2 other outfitters there and they were bragging about "consistenly" limiting out in 2-3 hours everyday. We did this as well on opening weekend but now the birds are so wild it is almost impossible. We hunted stuff this last weekend that had not been touched yet this year and birds were crazy wild. We flushed over 100 in one push and shot only 2. I really meant to have "consistently" in there. i look forward to your phone call.
thanks,

Mike,
Are you finding any of your native/wild birds insanely skinny?
I hunted around Plank last week, for 5 days, and there were fully feathered birds, that had absolutley nothing in the breast for meat. When you shot one, you wondered how it ever even flew. They were extremely light weight, and skinny, but looked great on the outside.
I just had another guy tell me about the birds in the chamberlain /lower brule area being the same way?
What are you seeing?

I guess I havent paid alot of attention. I do know we are harvesting way more mature birds than ever before. The young of the year birds are definetily down. I will ask my bird cleaner next weekend if she has noticed skinnier birds this year. Thanks for the heads up.
We have shot 485 pheasants 3 partridge 11 sharptail and 3 prairie chickens year to date.
thanks,
Mike

This is Dick Stille from Rooster Run Lodge. I don't guarantee limits, but limits have been the rule all season at my lodges. The lodge Dhotrod hunted at is in Hecla,SD. It has only been hunted 9 times this season. I am offering some December discounts [25-50%] at this lodge as well at the Leola,SD location.
December hunting can be challenging, but it can be some of the best hunting of the year
