I'm using I.E. 5.0 with 128bit encryption. All of a sudden , I've lost my ability to click on a URL link and have it open a new window. Also, I used to be able to open a new explorer window by clicking on file, new, open new window, but that no longer works either. I've had this problem before. Anyone know what might be causing it and a simple fix?
thanks

I tried re-booting. also went to add/remove programs and clicked on I.E...you cant remove it but you can "repair" it. I tried that but still no help. I've had this problem before but...due to early onset of oldtimers disease,,,cant rember how i fixed it! :)

Boat Nut,
If you are using Win 95 downlaod IE 5.5. If you have Win98 or later download IE 6.0, This will fix a lot of your problems. IE 6.0 smokes!
Hope this helps.

Another thing you can try is reloading your software that you are running like windows 98 or whatever you are running. This won't screw anything up and you won't lose anything. Sometimes we lose files that are shared with other programs and this will replace the lost or errored programs..

I have 2 things to try if you havent already.
Go to tools>internet options click on the advanced tab, then click on restore defaults.
But the one I would try first is: control panel> add/remove programs. Find Internet Explorer. Double click on it. It will give you a window to repair internet explorer. Try that. There is also a restore previous version there, too. This has fixed some weird stuff for me in the past.
Two fixes that I can think of; Mac 8.6 or above and Netscape 4.7 :D

Perch,
I tried the repair thing in add/remove hardware/i.e. explorer and it didnt work. I did do the RESTORE feature though and it worked. I had to download and install the patch to make it 128 bit encryption though. The weird thing is...i just now went to add/remove to make sure i did what I was talking about and i.e. isnt even listed there now. scary!
oh well..thanks all for your suggestions.

This fixed it for me.
Verify the following registry values match what's listed below:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Name: (Default)
Value: IDispatch
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32
Name: (Default)
Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Register the following library files: (Type "regsvr32 thefilename" on the run line)
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Urlmon.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Reboot and you should be good to go!
Feel free to email me if you need a little better instruction on how to do any of this.
Good luck!

I have messed up my Explorer from time to time and this is the fastest best fix I have found. This is also the recomended fix by Internet Explorer.
Go to “Start” then "Programs", then “Accessories”, and next “System tools”, then "System Information", then a new window will appear.
Now hit on the "TOOLS" on the top bar.
This will get you to the "Internet Explorer Repair Tool".
Just fallow the commands and after it scans the Explorer program it will need to re-boot the computer and fix any damaged or deleted files.
Sounds more complicated then it really is, an easy and quick restoration. It has fixed every snafu I have had so far.
The Internet Explorer 6 is much nicer then the older version. I would recommend the IE-6 download and then down the line the security upgrades.
I hope this helps you.

Eddy-thats the same program I led him to, but using a different way to get there. Glad it works for you. It has helped me, but only a few times.
As far as Wheels tip, editing the registry can be dangerous if not done properly. I suggest you make a backup of your registry before attempting this. If you go this route, email Wheels for more details before you begin. Im sure his tip is correct, you just dont want to make any wrong moves here.
