I have a 3yr old German Shorthair. I have trouble keeping him at home. I live in country so he has about 2 acres to run in yard. He will stay around for weeks, then he will look at you and run and not come back for days. I have a shock collar but when it's on him he is perfect. I don't want to leave that collar on him all the time. Some have said that when they fixed there dog he hung around, others have said it did not help. What to do.

Clipping them does help, all my males have been clipped and they've all stuck around and been good listeners. But, they've all been clipped young. Have you considered a dummy collar? If he sticks around with the collar on, a dummy might be the ticket.

I'm with Birddog..... Try a Dummy collar and change it around once in a while. Also if your dog is getting old you might want to neuter the old guy for his health.

Are you letting your dog run loose? An unsupervised dog running loose is a dog that is looking to get hit by a car.

I am outside with him. I have an acerage so I don't have worry to much about neighbors or traffic. But I can let him out and I will walk in the garage and come out the back door and he is already gone. Just don't understand what gett's in his head that he won't come back. I know he can't be out of listening distance that fast.

Unless you plan to breed him, clip him.
But moreover, I'd put up a kennel.
If this guy is gone that much and that long, he could be getting in all sorts of trouble. He will disappear for keeps one day.

Invisible fence is the best bet. That way you can have as much area as you want for him to be free in and hang out with you outside. When you want to take him out further just put on the hunting collar for control. My Griffons are all collar conditioned and I use Tritronics collars with the tone on them. They really respect the tone of he iinvisible fence when they here it. He will always have a collar on when out, just not the hunting collar. Great peace of mind. I bought my last system from Cabelas at about $250 and it has lasted for 12-13 years now.

I have a 5-year old black lab. I never neutered my previous labs but I finally did this one. We live in the country and he usually stayed around the place but every once in awhile he would take off for parts unknown for several hours or more. The problem started to become more frequent and he was seen several miles from home and crossed several roads to get there. I think he was looking for some loving! Therefore, about a year ago I had him ‘fixed.’ After a few months, his running ceased and I no longer have to worry about letting him out of the kennel.
