I would stick with Tri-tronics or Dogtra. He can spend the money on a cheaper collar but it won't hold up in the long run like a Tri or Dogtra IMHO. I've been running Dogtra for the last 3 years...ZERO problems. Before that I ran a Tri for many years...ZERO problems. The only reason I got rid of my Tri was I went to a multi dog system and I liked the small size of the Dogtra transmitter and reciever. My dad now has my old Tri, his lab is in the water/swamp all the time with it on, that sucker has been bullet proof!! When it comes to collars you get what you pay for. I have cousins and friends that have used Sport dog, Cabelas, and DT. Most of them now use Tri. or Dogtra, the "others" didn't hold up. Whatever way he decides to go, I strongly recommend a collar with tone or page, it's the only way to go. I rarely have to correct my dogs...they know what that page means. Thanks for the reminder...charge collars...opener is in 2 days!

Tri sold out a few years back..... The old goup of guys from Tri started a new company called Dogtra... If I was in the market for some new collars, I would really take a look at the Dogtra.
Good luck on your choice.
