I will be looking for a new puppy to replace my old friend who passed this Summer.
I have had G.S.P.'s since 1985. 2 were male and one was female. My female had an accident and I only hunted with her 2 or 3 times. My question is ( assumng that having a litter of pups is not a consideration )
What gender of dog do most upland hunters have? Does it matter?

I think it matters. Having had a few gsp's over the years and having 2 now, 1 male, 1 female, these are my observations. My males have always seemed to have been on the mellow side, mythodical, more gentle and better listeners. My females seem to have more drive in the field, be on the hard headed side and a bit more aggressive. These traits really seem to have held true over the years with different dogs I've had. Maybe it's their different pedigrees but I don't believe that to be totally true, yes, pedigree will play into the picture but I think if one was to take a male and female from the same litter they'd see some of these different personality traits I'm talking about. I see these traits ring true in the Britts my cousins has raised over the years also. If I wanted a pure hunter I would choose a female, If I want a companion/hunter I would choose a male. My females would go strong all day and not miss a beat, males would tend to slow down a bit as the day goes on. Both genders will get the job done, no doubt!! Good luck in your search for the perfect pup.
