View Full Version : Potty training question
Its been awhile since I've had to potty train. I am trying the crate method. The pup is a 10 week old lab. She usually gets me up twice a night to go out. When she whines, she has to go, so I'm happy with that part. However, for example, she was outside for about 30-45 minutes. I let her in and next thing I know, she is peeing on the kitchen tile. My wife and I have been very good about letting her out often and praise her like crazy when she goes. I am looking for some advice on what to do? THANKS
I'm going through the same thing. I have 2 new G.S.P. puppies. I have been doing the crate at night ( they sleep throught the night ) but they could be outside for 2 hours and about 10-20 minutes after they come in, I find a puddle.
So even after our 45 minutes walks, 15 minutes after they come back in I take them back outside and sure enough they go.
Seems to be working. I will extend the time little by little. I hope that works. The Mrs. is getting a little P.O. 'd ( pun intended ).

Maybe try bringing her right to where you know she pee's last, so she can sniff it and it might ring a bell. Also, whenever our dogs (now 6) were going pee or poop when they were little, I always used the word "potty" sort of like "sit" when they were sitting. Even now, all I have to say is "potty" and the dogs will still almost go on command. especially if it is getting late, and they are inside and I want them to go one last time for the night.
Good luck,

sometimes we used to jsut rub or labs nose in it and swat his butt, he used to poop behind the bed in the mornings after we had let him out. Its just time and rep's they start figuring it out, but it is frustrating but remember they are jsut babies too, so be patient it'll come quick.

Whatever you do don't put newspapers or anything else in the house that would encourage your pup to go indoors. I wouldn't swat or rub his/her nose in it either. When they do go inside pick them up immediately, look them strait in the eyes and give them a firm NO! I would suggest getting some string and a few bells hang it on the doornob and make sure you go to the door and giggle the string and say "Potty" before taking them outside to go. Labs are smart dogs, they will pick up on it real quick and will start ringing the bells when they need to go outside.
